We've gone all Marie Kondo since our lodger moved out with her toaster and kettle. We have clear work surfaces and hated the bulk and clutter. The new induction cooktop works beautifully with a bright red whistling kettle but I've been reduced to making toast using a wok.

WWSTD?

Buy a bright red whistling toaster to match the kettle.

This is STW. Surely you must have some artisan device made of cast iron which looks like a medieval torture implement but enables you to toast your home-made sourdough on the log burner?

Can you not do it in the pizza oven?

A cast iron skillet works fine if needed but yeah, grill it.

Grill? That's the thing in the oven that makes smoke, isn't it? I was hoping for something a little bit more artisan for sure. I might try one of our pizza trays on the cook top

When vetting the next lodger, ensure appropriate kitchen devices are included

Why do you concern yourself with such matters? Surely this is for your staff to work out?

Smoke would mean you’ve burnt your toast, that’s not the right way to do it

Or closed the door or really, really need to clean your oven. That said I guess beef dripping oven smoked toast is probably fairly Artisan,

Electric fire toast is best. you need to bend a fork to hold the bread and be able to hook onto the fire and be careful not to also touch the element, but if you've no grill its a good method.

Or using a wire rack to toast over a gas ring on a cooker, gas set to low and very quick so you have to take care not to burn it.

How to be a bastard. Visiting someones house - Turn their toaster up to full.

Did this with a gas fire in my college days. Bent a coathanger shelf onto the grille and could toast away to my heart's content. Thanks for bringing back that memory

One of my housemates at uni filled the detergent draw of a[nother household's] washing machine with coffee grounds on one occasion and the contents of an Ash tray on another before putting it on a wash cycle.
