I have a Nvidia tablet from 2015.

I pulled it out of the back of a drawer, did a factory reset and logged into google.

I wanted to use it for a bit of browsing while watching TV, football scores and stuff.

It's useless! Chrome just doesn't run properly.

Would a different browser be a better option?

unfortunately 'just a bit of browsing' seems to be one of the more intensive things you can ask devices to do really, as Internet connections have gotten faster web pages have become richer in content

There are probably lots of security ciphers for modern websites that the old browser will not support. You could use it as a MP3 or video player for local content but otherwise probably pretty limited.

I have the same tablet.

Go into the Developer Options in Settings (tap About then Build like 9 times to enable this option if you haven't already). Scroll down and set Limit Background Processes to 2. You're welcome, it took me years to work that out.

(This is from memory, the exact wording might be slightly off.)

The other option may be to install LineageOS, which I haven't tried on this particular device.

Book reader.

Send your PDF's, epubs etc. To it.

Use Apps...

Read Era
Lithium

Or a door bell camera.

Oh, and,

Try a different brower. There are dozens of lightweight ones.

@cougar - that's just transformed an old Galaxy Tab A from 2016  that we've got.

@Cougar

Thanks for that. It's usable with a lightweight browser.

Pretty certain it was you that recommended the Nvidia in the first place!

Hmm, wonder if that works on a Kindle Fire or if I've tried that already.

Opera has a data-saving setting where you can choose image quality (or set to off) to minimise mobile data use but I'm sure it'd also speed up browsing
(I like Opera for lots of other reasons and don't use this aspect)

Entirely possible. It was dirt cheap and lightning fast, in 2015. 😁

Oh, on that tip,

It doesn't survive a reboot. If you have to restart the tablet, you'll have to apply the setting again.

Any tips for recycling a totally dead (and won't charge) tablet? Do I need to be paranoid about some ne'er-do-well scraping my data from 10 years ago if I take it to the municipal recycling centre?

Whilst we are on this subject, what can I do on a 2 year old ipad to improve its performance?

Mrs Nosh can get on all the shopping web sites for clothes etc, funnily enough, but claims to be unable to load and open essential shopping such as Morrisons and Tesco, only Waitrose !!

I tried the 'developer' fix on an older Samsung Touch and it improved the browsing. Next is to load one of the lightweight browsers.

Is there anyway of removing Chrome?

Going to have a play with the Pixel 6a phone as well.

Ta - just setting up an old ASUS (Lollipop era) tablet using Wallpanel to display a dashboard from HA and that's made it waaay smoother.

My Nvidia shield tablet has a knackered charging port. I might see if I can repair it and get it going again. Probably not worth the effort though.
