The children obviously feel I have reached middle age and got me a 3 disc 'Dad Rocks' compilation to celebrate Father's Day. Just flicking through the inlay and on the back page is a prominent link to makepovertyhistory.org followed by a long winded spiel about copyright and how much illegal downloads hurt the artists. Now I've no objection to copyright and all that, but the rock stars on this CD are slightly above the poverty line I would wager!

Kenny, you make too many assumptions. What do you do for a living?

Way to miss the point, Lifer.

It would be like the WWF using the domestic housecat as a posterchild for endangered animals.

Of course they do. But they're hardly in the same boat as the people makepovertyhistory is supposedly aiming to help are they. It almost reads as if to say 'make poverty history by not depriving any of our rock stars of their royalties'. I'm sure they aren't saying that really, but it's amusing the way they've linked the two things

They wouldn't be that rich if we'd never had to pay for any of their music. they'd still be playing in the back rooms of pubs...

Although there's a protest planned for U2s headlining Glasto slot I gather which is designed to point out that they manage their finances such that they pay very little tax in Ireland even tho they live there. Which a) isn't very helpful for a country that's in serious financial straits and needs every penny of tax take it can get and b) U2 make such a racket about making poverty history.

It's nothing like that.

The artists get the message out to a wider audience than it otherwise would. Kenny can you scan the page/post a photo of it please?

yes nothing like millionaire tax exiles telling us poor people about our responisbilities to poor people. I admire him when he lectures govts on this despite minimising his own personal contribution
Personally I would quite like to make Bono history.
Seems a bit pointless putting this warning on a legit CD as well Everyone who downloads illegally knows what they are doing. If i am honest I dont loose any sleep over millionaires being a lit less wealthy because of my actions. Imagine if he could no longer do this?
here he is flying his hat first class for £1 k

If they want to get the message out to a wider audience, they should write songs about it and live accordingly. The thread the other day about ghost town is a perfect example of what they should be doing, greenwashing their public images with bull is just irritating.

Was it a U2 album then? Is there actually any U2 on the album?

Do you think an album of protest songs would reach as many people?

Can't post it, in the car. Not U2, just an emi compilation. It was just amusing 'timing' that's all.

Using that logic the pirates are doing the same, so they should be praised rather than castigated 🙂

**** the artists, the distributors etc, pirate the music and donate the money you would have spent paying for Bono's next helicopter directly to the Red Cross or charity of your choice. Everyone except Bono wins, and that can't be bad. Bono has to be the world's second biggest prick, after me of course.
