Loads of those animals hanging about on farms etc waiting to die are there cos we choose to eat them. They would not exist or have a life otherwise. They are not there for recreational purposes. I doubt sheep or cows wouldn't even exist if it was not for humans wanting to munch on them.

To put that in human terms Infanticide is better than an contraception because at least they had a life.
To not be borne is never worse than to be killed.

These threads should be good because, hopefully we can get a full range of opinions without being offensive to each other.

Indeed its amoral choice and you can make whichever one you want and we could have a reasonable debate ...it could happen on STW one day

Vegetables are what food eats.

I eat what I like, sometimes vege, sometimes meat. What ever tastes good.

calm down Junkyard. Is it not true that cows n sheep n pigs exist only for human consuption? They would be pretty useless at living out in the wild without us humans, they are too daft. They are species evolved to feed us? I'm not getting your Infanticide comparison.

Iirc I read somewhere (probably teh internetz) that chickens would be long extinct if we didn't eat them.

Could be wrong though.

I will attempt sensible debate and see how short it lasts

Is it not true that cows n sheep n pigs exist only for human consuption?

yes they did not exit till we made them to eat - nt even getting what your point is here tbh
They would be pretty useless at living out in the wild without us humans, they are too daft.

yes it is true farming does indeed require farming

They are species evolved to feed us?

they did not evolve to do this we selectively bred them to do this
I'm not getting your Infanticide comparison.

well if it is better to have a life , even a short one, then killing our young is better than contraception - its your argument just used on humans. It seems to break down quite easily as no one would argue that.
Iirc I read somewhere (probably teh internetz) that chickens would be long extinct if we didn't eat them.

It would not be extinct it would just never have existed as it comes from red junglefowl - bred for cock fighting not food originally

I simply don't see the issue in other people's food, it's just not on my radar.
I eat meat, I eat it with almost every meal. Why? I like it, it tasts nicer to me than non meat meals. Also, the simple reason for meat being an every day thing is cost. I can afford it. If I couldn't, I'd bulk out my with meals with more veggies. I don't think that's any different from most.
Vegetarians on a high horse? Well you don't often hear meat eaters getting radio 4 airtime betraying people for not eating meat...

what I'm saying is, and thanks for being so dismissive, is that if left to their own devices, sheep and cows would be killed out of existence by other species. Their tasty meat exists cos we want it to. You make a couple of good points there however DD. The underlying one me being quite thick 😀

Another person here who doesn't really care what other people eat.

But for someone to say they are "consistently amazed" that people rely on meat as the main part of a meal, and to suggest that I have a lack of imagination because I choose to do the same, suggests to me that other people care more about it than I do.

(I don't have a lack of imagination by the way, I regularly imagine I am a Caveman when I am cooking meat on a barbecue, and often imagine I am eating a succulent Kobe Fillet when it's actually a bit of Chuck on my plate)

to be fair, cows sheep and pigs are expensive, smelly and annoying. If it wasn't for the fact they're made of meat and yummy in my tummy they'd be toast as they would just be a "pest/vermin species" to the cereal crops and veg that we would need to feed everyone.

I just want a nice juicy burger.

YOU want the annihilation of entire species.

What I am reading is you dont want to defend your original statement re better to have a life no matter how short.

thanks for being so dismissive

No idea what you consider to be dismissive was it something like this 🙄

calm down Junkyard

left to their own devices, sheep and cows would be killed out of existence by other species

How did they survive long enough for us to use husbandry on them given this?

YOU want the annihilation of entire species.

I'd forgotten about the Sweet Sue chicken. That's such an ace product. For mid-Western Murkans, obviously.
My thoughts mostly go along the lines of:
I quite like meat, but I don't want to eat it all the time as there's lots of other nice things to eat out there as well.
Obviously quinoa is now off the menu. 😥
Fish is nice, but not all the time, as is fowl.

Really there is no point entering in debate if you get cross, dont defend your view then use abuse.

You could consider responding to what i said with counter points that suggest I am wrong in what I have said.

Eat meat dont eat me it is your choice but dont use weak arguments when doing so be it eating or not eating meat. I have heard plenty from both sides.
This made me laugh from one of these threads

I prepare and eat food stuffs. I don't make a great distinction about what source category it is. If it's edible and tasty, it's food.

Some folks seem awfully worried about eating animals bred for food when I think the real issue is about animal welfare and humane slaughter.

**** idiots

about the most sensible thing said on this thread.
although it still bears no relevance to the OP's original statement about meat with every meal.
for me, meat provides something that contains the protein I need/ want in a very tasty, affordable, simple and quick to prepare and cook form. I know of nothing that provides these things that isn't meat. I grew up with 2 vegetarians and whilst they make some great food it takes a lot of time and effort and they are constantly seeking out new things/ ways to cook and eat because things get boring quickly.
That is why, probably 90% of the time, I have meat/ fish with lunch and dinner.

To those using animal welfare in their case for vegetarianism, do they never stop to think of all the millions of animals that are killed farming their crops? Or do they just choose to ignore it? Or perhaps they think some animals are more equal than others?

I listened to it yes.

The cold congealed macaroni cheese "Christmas Turkey" made me sick a bit into my mouth.

Didn't hear mention of yorkshireosterich though.

Are they tasty ?

Of course they don't. They probably have little grasp of agribusiness, cash crops in developing countries, deforestation, how their food gets to the table and not forgetting their blinkered view of their own impact on the world from their lifestyle choices.
They remind me of the do-gooders and soap dodgers who rally against a conventional capitalist society and all the middle class aspirational baubles people desire yet are quite happy to use the Internet, education system, NHS etc when it suits them.

Indeed if one chooses to criticise the current system in any way could you do it from a cave in your own blood with a stick lest you look hypocritical.
Ps two of those three are state funded [ do you need to know which ones?] and not capitalist and the the www came from state funding. Apart from that its brilliant 🙄
I can never quite work out whether people believe it when they type stuff like that tbh.

As for hypocrisy it is there for everyone if you want to get in a forth about it
Why wear leather but not fur?
Breed for food but not for coats?
Why eat a cow but not a dog or a cat?
Why not eat veal?
Why only eat certain parts of the animal?
Humane Killing - oxymoron and why bother?
Etc

Really eat what you want but I cant see why some meat eaters get so annoyed because some folk dont eat meat

the pigs watch what is going on every weekend and the he said that on the first day the pigs would come out of their pens after the training was over and do half of the things they were training the dogs to do

that is amazing.
but not as amazing as a bacon sandwich.

Let's deal with a few common misconceptions before I have to call House on my vegetarian bingo card.

We're designed / evolved / whatever to be omnivores, not carnivores or vegetarians. So to anyone bleating about teeth or eyes or appendices or whatever, it's a moot point. We've survived and thrived because we're adaptable.

"Moralising" vegetarians are, in my experience, actually pretty rare. I've certainly seen more aggression from the omnivores (maybe it's all that testosterone in the red meat 🙂 ). The PETA 'meat is murder' brigade are to vegetarians what suicide bombers are to muslims; the extremist fringe minority that gives the rest a bad name.

Not everyone is vegetarian for the same reason. Some don't eat meat for ethical / cruelty reasons, some for health reasons, some due to allergies, some for religious reasons, some because they don't like the taste / texture, and so on. Me, I don't eat meat for the same reason I don't eat turds; I can't disassociate from what it is and I think it's just plain revolting (and I'm lucky enough to live in a society where I don't have to, so why would I?) So, triumphant omnivores "catching us out" because we wear leather shoes or drink milk are probably missing the point. I don't eat my shoes.

Vegetarians who eat veggie sausages aren't secretly pining for meat. Things like burgers aren't a natural form of meat, they're just a convenient way of delivering protein. Vegetarians appreciate convenient packaging as much as the meat eaters do.

It's unusual but, some vegetarians do pine for meat. I wish they'd shut up and have some. We'd both be happier.

The Western diet, generally, contains too much protein. Meat in moderation is good for you (so long as it's 'good' meat). Eating meat constantly or exclusively isn't so much.

A vegetarian diet isn't innately unhealthy. See the first point. It can be lower fat than a non-veggie diet but, as with any restrictive diet, it can be unhealthy if you don't take a little care to get a balance of nutrition.

Most vegetarians don't care what you eat (though see the PETA point; some do, but they're largely arseholes). It's your body, put what you want in it. I'd personally consider it a favour if you didn't chow down onto something highly pungent that I find completely repulsive when I'm sharing a table with you, in the same way that I'd rather you didn't smoke or drop your guts whilst I'm eating, but if you really want liver and onions I'm not going to say anything about it; ultimately it's nothing to do with me.

Just because we can do something, doesn't mean we should. You want to eat meat, good for you, though I'll have more respect for you if you're comfortable with the whole process of what you're eating rather than only consuming meat where other people have done the wetwork for you and rendered it unidentifiable in nice shrink-wrap boxes.

Vegetarians don't eat fish. If you eat fish, you're not a vegetarian. The term you're looking for is "pescetarian." This point is lovingly dedicated to the Americans in the audience.

And seeing as this is STW I'll close with a rant-ette. "tuna pasta bake" is not a viable vegetarian option on a restaurant menu, and if you only have one vegetarian dish on your menu it's not an "option", it's mandatory. Also, just because we don't eat meat doesn't mean we want to play guessing games. If your menu lists seven different types of chicken and has "vegetarian option (ho ho) available" as a little footnote at the end, I won't be eating in your establishment. Omnivores, if you fancied chicken, would you want to dine somewhere that listed everything else and then said "chicken option also available" at the end?

Did I miss anything?
