what do i need? It's a used mac so i;m concerned i don't have all the gubbins i need to complete it and not just end up with a nice looking brick

Except when they don't....

What Mac have you got? That's quite an old OS now.

If you do a time machine back up before you start you'll have something to fall back on when it goes tits up.

Stop worrying for nothing.

Oh and always go the Mac forums for advice about it. NEVER here... it will always just degenerate into a thoroughly pointless topic about who's got a bigger tech willy- Mac vs M$

Just do a backup before hand and then update.
I'm on the latest OSX on a 2008 Macbook Pro and it runs fine. Actually it runs better and faster than when on Yosemite.

El Capitan is not available in the UK app store apparently.

It's definitely there, I've just updated to 10.11.3 on an older machine than yours. Simplest way should be to go to the app store and click on "updates", but you'll need to be signed using your Apple ID in first.
