what do i need? It's a used mac so i;m concerned i don't have all the gubbins i need to complete it and not just end up with a nice looking brick
Just let it update. Macs are designed to just work.
Macs are designed to just work
Except when they don't....
What Mac have you got? That's quite an old OS now.
If you do a time machine back up before you start you'll have something to fall back on when it goes tits up.
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
You'll be absolutely fine with that spec.
Stop worrying for nothing.
Oh and always go the Mac forums for advice about it. NEVER here... it will always just degenerate into a thoroughly pointless topic about who's got a bigger tech willy- Mac vs M$
Just do a backup before hand and then update.
I'm on the latest OSX on a 2008 Macbook Pro and it runs fine. Actually it runs better and faster than when on Yosemite.
well it's started well.
El Capitan is not available in the UK app store apparently.
yes it is
have you got anything else off there?
Click "Featured" and look in the list on the right.
It's definitely there, I've just updated to 10.11.3 on an older machine than yours. Simplest way should be to go to the app store and click on "updates", but you'll need to be signed using your Apple ID in first.
