A really odd question here - I have been doing some spring cleaning and archiving old work. Halfway through the task, suddenly every folder is copying rather than moving. I have double checked and both the folders are in the same location but every time I attempt a move it copies instead.

I have tried making some new dummy folders and items are moving as I would expect, it is just these existing folders seem to want to copy.

Source folder: /Users/user_name/Desktop

Destination folder: /Users/user_name/Desktop

But it insists on copying - and started to do it halfway through the task - is there a setting somewhere I can change?????

I recommend changing the destination folder, then moving it to /Users/user_name/Desktop and you should be fine.
Wow that was a long sentence.

I have tried that - it seems the permissions have gone to pot.

But it does appear that the original source backup DVDs were ones created by an external IT bod after we had a system failure - I bet he copied them on a PC and that has somehow caused the problem - just an incompatibility with the Mac. All the previous files were copied from DVDs originally created on my Mac and they behaved as I would expect.

Are you logged in as that user or an admin? Check the folder permissions - perhaps you have read but not write permissions for that user folder?

I am logged on as a user, but I have only ever been logged on as me. I guess if the IT bod was logged on as an administrator...
