since an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, the Dashboard (the one with the calculator and other widgets) now has a crap grey lego brick background
how do i replace this with the transparent background that snow leopard had?

System Preferences > Mission Control > Uncheck 'Show Dashboard As Space'.

Just as a follow up, if you want to keep the dashboard as a separate space, you can change the background with a bit of tinkering:
