Nothing too fancy - nice cafe or pub.

Come on hive mind, you've not failed me yet! 🙂

Arden Arms is a short walk across town and a nice pub. Other than that you're, er, limited...

In defence of Stockport (I know), it's obviously not St Tropez, but it's no worse than most other towns of its size in the country. Including many/all of the ones in the North Manchester Nirvana that Binners habituates.

As for specifics, I can't help, but if you can't find a pub in Stockport that'll give you a decent pint, pie, chips and peas I'll eat my hat.

Nando's/KFC/MacD's if your stuck in Stockport, there's a couple of nice pubs in High Lane but that's if you don't mind the short drive.

Binners is only jealous.....

Da vincis on St. Peter's gate is quite nice. (Or it was!)
Bit further along in the market, the food hall had a good cafe.
The Red Bull on middle hill gate is a really nice pub, not eaten in there but it's ment to be nice

If you're after liquid, then The Hope sells a decent range of beers Just outside the centre (slightly up the A6 towards Manchester). They might do pies, which is all a man needs to soak up some of the alcohol....

depends whereabouts in stockport you are, there are outlying areas such as heaton mersey and heaton chapel that have good restaurants like the yeti's retreat [ nepalese ] or villages like hyde which have good pubs .

Is 'Ups and Downs' still there? They used to do a great range of kiddies meals, especially on a Friday night and you'd get a half price ticket to get into Christies if you had one.

Thanks folks. Will be going to the town hall (checking it out for a wedding I'm photographing tomorrow) and the market area I think.

Why would anyone get a train from the real-ale nirvana that is Stockport to go to the beardy pretention-fest of the Northern Quarter? The mind boggles. Just down the hill from Stockport train station, under the viaduct is a pub called The Crown. The beer there is second to none. Don't know about food but they have a good range of crisps 🙂

Most places will sell traditional food of pies, buns, chips or all 3 together, plus gravy - do you need a specific recommendation?

And with a place like the Crown who needs food? Just check out the photography stuff before you go for "lunch".

If you're driving over then hop in the car and pop over to Cheadle village (you can call in at NWMTB on the way) and grab lunch at Jas Jas Jas - Lebanese and mediterranean food. The Shwarmi kebab is AWESOME.

Goshm, Arden arms (actually the other side of the town centre from the Town Hall so only *just* closer then Cheadle!) is more highly rated than Jas Jas Jas

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurants-g528793-Stockport_Greater_Manchester_England.html

I've not been to the Arden Arms though, I know Stockport Clarion meet there for rides (and post ride drinks), but I've eaten several lunches from Jas Jas Jas and I've never had a bad one.

Thanks everyone. Jas Jas Jas sounds good for future reference. We had pies from Lord of the Pies near the market in the end. Very nice they were too.
