Can anyone suggest a long ish bike ride from the Paddington area? I was thinking of heading to Richmond park.. I suppose actual countryside is too far away.

You can do a canal/river loop from Paddington with the only road sections being Brentford - Kew Bridge and Hammersmith - Paddington. Otherwise along the River to Richmond up into and around the Park and onto Wimbledon Common, big loop and back aint bad.

Depends what you mean by longish. I never like coming back into London, always seems like a rubbish way to end a nice bike ride. Ride out and round a bit, get a train back in. Or, given that your weekend return is 10p more than a single, skip the london bit altogether, get out to somewhere like Langley just outside M25 and do a loop from there.

I assumed road bike ride too. Was that wrong?

Stay on the train, Swindon and the world round the back of Nationwide awaits...

if it's offroad you're after and can get to the river, try following these (terrible) directions.

On to the Thames path at Putney bridge
Left after Beverly brook
Cross Putney lower common (cheeky)
Across Mill Hill road into the woods
Queens ride to gypsy lane
Gypsy lane to Putney park lane (dirt track)
Into Putney heath (cheeky woodland)
Under the A3
Trundle through Wimbledon common for a while
Turn right at some point (through a car park?)
down a big hill to Beverly brook again
follow the brook back towards Richmond park
Offroad lap of Richmond park
Drop out of the park at Richmond gate
Head down to the river
Follow the river back round to Putney

Should be 35km + with very little road.

or have a look at a roughly similar route (missing the return via the river and starting with the river, Barnes to Putney) on Strava here

It's not that taxing, I did it fixed/brakeless but it does get the wind in your hair and the miles in your legs.

I'd stay north and head to regent parks, Hempstead Heath or Alexandra palace park.

Well that was fun. I felt pretty tired so I thought I'd just tootle back along the river a bit. I got involved in some sort of impromptu chain gang eliminator race after Lambeth which was a great laugh. I got caught at some lights by a huge gang of roadie types on their way home from work, the rules seemed to be go as fast as you can until the next light, last man standing wins.. managed to keep up mostly until the last one, then people started turning off.

Ended up somewhere in Chelsea, bimlbed about for a while getting lost. Good fun 🙂
