Ripped all my cds and now looking for something to stream to hi fi. Was going to go for the logitech duet but have since seen that there's an iphone app that does the job of the controller. Looks like I just need to get the squeezebox receiver? I'm looking to play tunes in an upstairs room direct from pc and to stream to hi fi downstairs. One thing I'm concerned about is my wireless inteernet signal is poor upstairs (router downstaitrs in living room) - is there anyway to solve this? Anything else I need ??
cheers 🙂

Just had a look at the squeezebox, looks pretty nice. No user experience of that but...

I use the Apple Airport Express which allows music streaming through iTunes ( http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/features/airtunes.html). Then use the iphone remote app to control it. Airport costs £79 RRP but I picked one up for £40 on ebay a while back.

To boost your wifi signal you could make an antenna booster (

Or depending on where you are placing all this stuff, I think, the Airport Express can act as a booster thing. So it takes the signal from your wifi and then kicks it out again.

I've got a squeezebox and its great. Use the iphone remote (i use iPeng, others are available, but iPeng is as close to the itunes interface as you'll get.) and its very straightforward to use. Also opens up a whole world of internet radio.
However, its not exactly plug and play, it is quite a pain in the arse to set up, took me quite a while to get everything working properly, and sometimes it just stops for no apparent reason, not enough to be a pain, but just randomly.
It also wont play apples lossless format, so if you've ripped cds to itunes using that you'll have to re-rip them, and any bought from itunes store will need to be converted.
Over all, i really like it, but i think the apples airport is probably more user-friendly, but less powerful

I've got a duet, squeezebox 3 and a transporter (not all currently in use).

In my previous house, where there was a lot of other wireless networks nearby, I found they wouldn't connect reliably and sometimes the player would loose connection whilst playing. I tried moving my network to an unused part of the spectrum but without a lot of improvement.

Now I've moved somewhere with less wireless traffic they work faultlessly. You can also download a player for your PC and sync that with the various actual players so the same track is playing throughout the house - I used to use this quite a bit.

I've heard good things about http://www.sonos.com/ too, though I expect that to be a slightly more expensive option.

Love em, started off with a squeezebox 1 before replacing with 2 sb 2's, built a mini server using this excellent guide. Nearly lost my girlfriend with countless experiments ripping cd's and tinkering with the bloody things though. Very good user community.

For a reliable signal you could always use network power plugs and wire the squeezebox using ethernet ?

I have one, it's bloody fantastic I found it very easy to set up and as long as the hosting computer is alive it works grand. I've linked mine with Napster so just hunt albums at free will and play them.

Yep, got a squeezebox duet - it's pretty good! I have been trying to hack my NAS to work as a server, but I don't think it is up to it so may have to add either a dedicated "proper" box, or the approved Netgear NAS box to act as a music server. If it was PnP compatible it would make life sooo much easier.

hitman

Not just yet. I want to run some listening tests with my current set up before deciding if I should keep the SB3 or the Transporter (I will be taking a feed out of them into a very high end DAC). The Duet is in another room.

best bets for 2nd hand ones are www.pinkfishmedia.net, www.hifiwigwam.com, www.zerogain.com, www.hi-fiadverts.co.uk. A wanted ad on these will soon turn something up.
