Our cul-de-sac loves an excuse to sit on the road together in any circumstance. I can't be doing with it under any circumstance.
They generally seem to manage the distancing though, but the kids not so much, so what's the point?
My irk at the moment, is that a house on the corner of the nearby council estate has a guy who runs a mobile disco - you can guess the rest, but I'll fill in the blanks.
Last night, we had all manner of cheesy pop/disco blasting out. People a good half mile away were asking where the party was on Facebook as they could hear the music.
I let it pass, as thought there may be an extended NHS appreciation nonsense excuse - it started at 8 and finished around 10. This now appears that it's going to be a regular thing, as I got invited to the Thursday night street disco page today. Do they not know me? 😂 It's thinly veiled as raising funds for a care home, but that part of it doesn't seem to have generated much interest.
Aaaaaaannnndddd tonight, it's on again!!!!
Again, I'll let it pass, the first hour was wartime songs, we are now fully back into cheesy pop though.
I'm confident that the bloke who organises it, will believe that 10 people stood on the street 'enjoying' it, validates it's popularity. The other hundreds of people that live nearby, maybe aren't enjoying it quite so much.
If it makes an appearance tomorrow, the Babylon are getting a call
Our little cul du sac residents have been having a weekly quiz. Every participant sits on their drive. Then when it's over all the people who are taking this social distancing seriously, pack up, thank the quiz master, then retire.
The other knob heads get pissed at the bottom of the road and just have a party.
Same today I imagine. I wouldn't mind but the neighbours work in a care home and proudly tell us all how they've kept the residents and staff safe.
It makes my blood boil.
We had a few households out in in their front gardens, no problem with that but some local idiot was letting off fireworks at 5 in the afternoon, bright blue sky. I just ask why?
Just been out for a bike ride and very sad at the complete selfishness of a small minority. Quite a few having full on street parties. Gazebos out on verges, blocking pavements, no social distancing at all, dancing in the street whilst clearly pissed.
It must be very miserable if you happen to live in the middle of it and are elderly/vulnerable. It isn't a game. For these people it is a likely death sentence if they catch it.
Thousands of people are dying and yet large parts of society don't give a shit.
If Al Qaeda were killing 500+ people every day we would literally be on a war footing.
What on earth will the rest of Europe think to this?
Who gives a shit, we've f***ing abolished Europe, beat em twice the whole ****ing lot of em. Yeah? This'll show em. They don't like it up em you know.
Etc.
Don’t live in a close or a cul-de-sac seems to be the answer...
Been cycling around today - lots of people seeming to enjoy themselves responsibly in the villages near me in Cockermouth.
Looking at the BBC website - have a scroll down to the picture in Milan.

Some people are dicks but it would appear that all of them are Brits...
Plenty of people out in their drive ways and front gardens around where I live and surrounding villages and towns, all social distancing, plenty of music and merriment and talking to each other her over fences and hedges and across roads.
That describes my road perfectly. Everyone out in their front garden showing off vintage crockery, no households within 2m of each other.
Not really my thing, but I can honestly say I had nothing better to do.
I live in a quiet street, part of it is currently heaving with pissed up neighbours, bunting and karaoke. They've even dragged the frail old lady out of her house to be with them.
we would literally be on a war footing
But we are.
Sadly, from a grown up point of view, it is one that is 75 years out of date.
Some people seem to have given up on it around here too (South Coast). Beach rammed, parties, BBQs, people driving to each others houses etc etc.. Our neighbours had 3 car loads around for a party.
Given the enormous cost in personal and economic terms of the lockdown, surely it needs either enforcing or abandoning?

Personal? Economic?
You are forgetting the overriding one, though.
Political.
Is anyone really surprised? Government spent the last week talking about relaxing the rules, the PM called it "unlockdown", lots of "sources say" and other leaks in the press... All of the messaging all week has encouraged people to stop taking it seriously, with today's "nothing has changed" coming so late that it wouldn't change any plans. And now they can blame "irresponsible people" or "wanton criminality" and wash their hands of it. And our horrendous death toll, which actually is pretty much entirely because they absolutely botched the lockdown at the start, can be blamed on people who broke it.

It's not what actually happens that matters, but how you apportion the blame.
That's populist politics for you...
It did get a bit out of hand here. Police turned up and had a word when some folks put all their tables and chairs out on the green. Walked the dog this eve with the wife and the front garden parties had all moved into the street. You couldn't walk through, so went the other way. No big deal, but no way was it lockdown.
We are a social animal. Its hardwired in (most) of us. It was inevitable this lock-down could only be sustained for so long.
It will be fine, the sunshine kills the virus! That is the level of stupid we are up against.
Loads of garden parties in sunny hampshire this afternoon as i was bimbling around
The sunshine and general bonhomie still didnt stop 1 arse from hurling the usual " Get off the road, you dont pay road tax or insurance "
I do, my Volvo is £275 a year for tax and £220 to insure , plus my bike wheels are worth more than your shite T reg faded to pink Toyota starlet
The other 50 miles, glorious
Government spent the last week talking about relaxing the rules
Only because they were being forced to release details of how they were going to release the lockdown by other political parties, etc. If people and/or press then interpret that as "let's have a bbq and get pissed in the sun" then you can hardly blame the government.
Some people are dicks but it would appear that all of them are Brits…
That Milan Pic, social distancing to pot, 4 out of 6 visible masks incorrectly worn and to go with that the Mayor is planning to get medieval on the area and shut it completely.
Lets see how Milan is doing in 3 weeks time, Italian deaths were 247 today for a marker.
A bunch of idiots who actually believe that staying at home for 6 weeks (apart from daily walks/runs/bike rides etc) is the equivalent of the hardship of WW2. If we're going to be a laughing stock on the world stage we might as well do it properly.

Bugger me, never knew it was Labour's fault. Didn't they lose the election or something?
then you can hardly blame the government.
You absolutely can. The government has made a complete hash of the whole thing and continue to do so. It's easy to blame the individuals but that really is a distraction from where the blame lies.
Much as I personally didn't have much truck with VE day, round here it has been pretty well-behaved. Rode though three local villages on today's one-a-day - each one had a few folks sat in their front gardens or on the path chatting to neighbours through the sea of bunting and flags. Only saw a couple of people breaking 2m, so in the genteel middle class villages of East Northants the vast majority are still playing ball (the residents of the local town less so judging by my weekly visit to the supermarket there).
Best moment was at once very cool (in a sad way) and painfully cheesy. One village sits on a slight hill (as much as we have hills round here), and as I rose from the saddle to grind my way up I got the full TdF rolling applause and urging on from the 'crowds' lining the road, as if I was cresting the Tourmalet at the front of the breakaway.
(BBC website source, Friday 11am)
"Foreign secretary Dominic Raab, leading the government’s daily coronavirus press conference in Downing Street, said: “There is no change today in the guidance or in the rules.”
Except if you wave flags, bunting and have a street party to celebrate... really ashamed by those 10 o'clock news pics, WTF!!
Money is no sign of class.
Oh, I absolutely agree but you are talking about professional people here, the type that society would look to for support.
I have no illusions and have a son classed as at risk so take no chances. Those that say the papers have no influence are talking rot.
What exactly is everybody celebrating? That 75 Million people died? I just find this VE Day a total jingoistic distasteful display . Just look how other countries such as France are remembering this day and it’s a much more sombre affair.
The eldest, who’s bedroom window the party is under asked me to go and ask if the remaining partygoers could keep the noise down a bit.
Got a load of abuse from the newest resident in the street, having a go at me for not clapping for the nhs. Earlier in the week she had two women turn up at her house and they all went inside then went for a walk together. Fuming.
Gave as good as I got though, stupid fat bitch 😡
Edit - we do clap for the nhs, we just do it from inside the front door, because I hate people. Also, I think it’s more important to do the things rather than the displays.
Jingoism at its best....
Start looking to where you want to be the future and not to what you once where in the past.
The UK is so hung up on its past glories that it forgets to look to the future. Does any other country in Europe have such celebrations?
I know of no other country that rests on its laurels nor stand on the shoulders of its past glories like the UK manages to do.
Oooh. Look at us. Two World Wars and one World Cup. Rule Britannia. Bunting.
Think about where you want to go, not where you have been.
Woohoo!
Maybe I'm not so much of an outlier as I thought...
Its a public holiday every year in both Germany and France, the last time it was a public holiday in the UK was 25 years ago.
We had a street party with our neighbours. When I say party, we sat about five metres apart, exchanged a cake and sprayed our hands first. They are on they’re own, and missing the family badly, so it was nice to chat. And we also played a little jazz. There was bunting. I think this was reasonable.
Lots of social distancing stuff going on down our road today, which I steered clear of, but good luck to them.
Special mention for the couple who set themselves up on the public footpath though.
I've not been out enough really to know wtf is going on, other than the playground in the square was almost normally busy for a sunny day. Went to the chippie yesterday. Woman in Chippie said she thought people don't care any more. Can confirm chip shop portions are still ludicrously over-sized. Saved the leftovers for later that evening. I still weave about all over the place to avoid getting close to people and stare furiously at my feet at the people who loiter around pinch points - why do they do that? Um, had home made scones earlier, were probably the nicest ever had... I had no part in their production, 3yo did the mixing!

Can't speak for France, but today in Germany was just like any other day other a short bit in the news I heard on the radio this morning.
Unless you're confusing today with 11.11., St Martin's Day, which is the beginning of carnival in Germany.
Public Holiday in Berlin, which was covered in the press here, but seemingly not elsewhere - used to be a public holiday in the East. Someone said on here it was an annual holiday, apparently not. The point still stands that there are plenty of countries that celebrate the end of WWII with a public holiday more frequently than the UK.
The elders were having a street party in the cul de sac when I got up from my third night shift in the hospital today. 13 of them sat on one front garden. It's ok becuase they were sat two metres apart. 🙄
We didn't get an invite, I guess that's because I'm a selfish millenial who doesn't appreciate VE day and both my wife and I are covered in covid from seeing to patients.
We then took the kids for a walk across the fields. Large group of teens having a party with cans of Stella. Good for them. They are young so it'll only kill someone else's father or nan. Let em crack on.
I'm just getting annoyed that I'm trying to stick to the rules. maybe I need to be a C U Next Tuesday as well. Seems acceptable, I haven't got grandparents and my dad lives abroad, won't kill anyone I care about.
At the risk of rerunning a previous thread, are all the posters quite rightly concerned at people taking big risks making obvious breaches of the lockdown rules reporting it to the Police?
Either these people need to be warned/fined to stop their dangerous behaviour, or we need to leave them to it and stop letting it get us so upset.
Getting - justifiably, from the descriptions of some of the antics - so angry about it but doing nothing to stop it strikes me as a lot of wasted negative emotion.
Seems quite a few countries celebrate VE Day Alpin.

Albeit without the patriotic flag waving devoid of any real reflection other than a sense of us vs them and "yay, Union Jacks!".
Surprised at how many people had gatherings in their front gardens - the same people who previously would have been lockdown zealots. Just really strange. And it tended to be the "new money" people eager to show off their (perhaps fleeting) wealth to the neighbours. Made me realise how much I dislike living where I do! Time to move.
Getting so angry about it but doing nothing to stop it strikes me as a lot of wasted negative emotion.
Are you new here?

People. (Mildly) Anti Social Behaviour in a specific spot near me. All over Facebook. Talking to the local rozzer it became clear that more reports prompt more action. I decided we ought to try to organize and generate 200 reports. (random target I made up) Before I started I checked with the local police 'commander' (cool word!) to see how close we were to our target. There had been zero reports of anti-social behaviour. I gave up.
Complainers like complaining, they don't actually want the things they're complaining about to stop.
Seems quite a few countries celebrate VE Day Alpin.

Just because they have money doesn’t mean they’re not chavs! In fact isn’t that what chavs all aspire to..!?
