Heading over for a long weekend with a lady friend... anyone got any good tips? Both into art galleries/architecture/cafes/markets/bars/clubbing that sort of thing. 😉
Cheers!
The Gulbenkian museum is very good for a hour.
The Garage Theatre bar near the castle is a hoot and has wonderful views over the city.
Watch your pockets.
Lisbon's a great weekend. Bars basically, lots of bars. Forget the names, they blur as does everything else, in the high up old town bits. Some good jazz places, free to get in as I recall. It's a good place to wander/stagger.
+1
Fall through the doors of anywhere in Bairro Alto and you'll have a great time!
As above I can't remember the names of places, up into the old town and see what takes your fancy. Beeches and coast are worth a trip maybe for a drink as sun goes down ? Great city, I have a few friends who have recently retired there as its a fun city and cheap.
Brilliant city - one of Europe's best. Exciting and culturally diverse. As above, Gulbenkian is great but it takes a while to reach and you'd have to rush around if you only left an hour. There's a modern gallery attached to the old collection there. There's a free design museum in the city centre - worth a quick look in. Loads of good bars, and viewpoints with bars overlooking the city. Great for drinking caipirinahs. Decent modern art gallery on the waterfornt too, but you need to catch a tram I think. Great city for people-watching. Jeronimos Monastery and the adjacent cathedral are stunning. If you go, try to enter the cathedral on the balcony level the first time you enter it - it made my jaw drop.
Don´t miss Sintra with its fairy-tale castles and forests, easy to get to by train. Sintra
Cascais is worth a day trip. A few little beaches, walkable little village centre with pubs etc. Easy to get there on the train too. Also, there is a Food hall in town near the Cais do Sodre station which hosts independent start-up restaurants, loads of tasty and cheap stuff - https://goo.gl/maps/PpvVEizLS6U2
...absolutely. But even with the ££ on the floor it's a cheap city, and uber's a great and cheap way to get around - much better than here. Cheap and v good drivers, who all had good english in my exp (probably because the language is a bugger, my efforts peter out rapidly compared to elsewhere in europe.) Good surf too. In fact what am I doing here?
great stuff chaps, definitely enough for us to consider there! 🙂
As mentioned above, the food market near the station is ace. We ate there a few times http://www.timeout.com/market
Also went to a restaurant called pharmacia on the recommendation of one of the stall holders, was pretty good, all dec'd out like a laboratory inside
..these tips - aimed at someone altogether hipper than me - nevertheless aren't bad:

I think we ate in the decadente one night. and somewhere else that was good. hth
I'll be there on a stag next weekend so you might see me staggering around Bairro Alto. Went in January with the wife tho which was great. Agree with all the above. Wife loved the great wine bars too.
Belem is worth a visit, its about 15 minutes from the center on the train. If you are going on the train make sure you validate your ticket, we didn't and the whole family got chucked off the train and had to wait for another one. Wouldn't have been too much of a problem but we nearly missed our taxi to the airport because of it. The CBB Centro Culture De Belem which is a big gallery with a great restaurant which does Sushi and Pizzas. Service isn't the quickest but if you're not in a rush a nice place to go and eat inside or out. Gallery has some interesting / weird stuff and worth a good couple of hours.
There's also a couple of towers you can go up (one by lift and the other by stairs which give a good view) If you go you must visit Pasties De Belem. There will be a queue like you wont believe but the custard tarts are amazing. These were the first ones I tried, after that I tried loads of others, but none were anywhere near.
just literally come back - and got a local work colleague to suggest a few places. More local-ly than tourist-y.
There's a new brewpub on the Calçada do Duque, which was very good. Loads of beers. Excellent restaurant next door
The market is excellent for a simple lunch etc. Loads of little popup food areas, and pour your own Sagres.
This was a lovely little restaurant. Well hidden though. Very local. And shuts early.
This was ice cream place du jour. Amazing flavours and so cheap in comparison.
Lot of crap in the Castalo and Alfama areas, but Miss Can was good for a simple lunch.
Wouldn't bother with the Belem Tower - queues are immense. Pop about 200 yards up stream, and there's the Discover's Tower. Cheaper. Taller. Better views.
If you do do the touristy #28 tram, get on it by 9am. Otherwise you'll be queuing for hours and when on it you won't be able to see anything.
another couple of recommendations we didn't visit.
this was shut for the summer but supposed to be lovely.
This one is a bit touristy, but if you get a seat over the Miradouro it'll be amazing.
Recommended as a good place to drink - but a bit further away from it all.
Loads of stuff to explore here
