MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Sorry if this old news & I should have read a post within a 20 page thread somewhere to have gleaned this information, but I have just had a Eureka moment!
Since the new & 'improved' forum was rolled out, when I want just a plain, old skool carriage return I get a big gap. This can mean that sentences about the same thought/idea/subject can get split up, when really you want to just neaten up a block of text with a new line.
See.
But, I accidentally hit shift & return earlier today & it gave me a new line without the massive gap in between,
Like This.
And This.
It's a similar thing to posting on Facebook (not that anyone on here is that dweeby to post on Facebook these days). Holding shift while typing a post gets you a carriage return, rather than instantly posting your latest bit of hot gossip before it's ready for the world to see.
That is all. Simple thing, but I bet there are a few others who haven't worked this out.
If there was a "like" button is have pressed it.
Now how do you do shift return on a phone keyboard.

Just
like
this.

Huh. Who knew. Nice find.
That's a soft return – it's for formatting typography in a visually pleasing manner:
This is the title of the book
This is the author
This is the first line of text arcu in neque donec urna vivamus ac augue nec ipsum tempor interdum suspendisse augue quam venenatis nec congue at accumsan atmassaed quis tortor ut dui vestibulum euismod.
As above, how, exactly, do you do that on a touchscreen keyboard? I’d imagine a significant number of members would appreciate knowing.
Does it work?
Mmm......
Answers on a postcard from Skegness.
Nope is the answer. iPhone on latest iOS.
I post from a laptop and was just being an arsehole, but I think most of you know that already.

Dunno. I was doing it on my computer at work...isn't that where most people seem to access this forum from... 😉

Don't use a soft carriage return for this: your post appears differently on each device I use to look at this forum because the browser window is a different width on each meaning that the soft carriage returns that the browser adds are in different places. So your neatening
makes things look
crap. The browser's soft carriage returns may occur at a sentence end, that's just chance.
Paragraph spacing like all spacing is there to aid legibility. The spacing is one of the few good things about the editor, previously I had to use two carriage returns for the job. Soft carriage returns are fine for lists, so:
1. One
2. Two
3. Three
Oh and single spaces after a full stop. Period.

Not so sure about this one... I've always liked double spacing
ArsTech has a pretty good article
... but who really cares?

whitestone - I'd be interested to know where you think I put soft carriage returns in (if that's what they are called) based on how the text is being formatted on your various browsers.
Clue; there are only 2 in the OP.
Double spaces after a full stop - very much a style guide issue. Personally I don't like them - you missed the (subtle pun 🙂 )
@stumpy01 - they are in your pseudo list. In general you don't need soft CRs, just use hard (normal) CRs to split what you write into paragraphs wherever is logical depending on train of thought, points being made, etc.
This surely is all irrelevant as the tech bods are working away in the background to get all the many screwed up editing foibles of the forum sorted, aren't they... Aren't they?

Irrelevant in HTML anyway, it'll treat one space the same as 15 when rendering unless you use non-breaking spaces.
I
am
just
testing.
It works!
@Cougar - I know 🙂 If you can use the appropriate tags then < pre > and < code > will also preserve whitespace (and line breaks)
I've just found something - if you want to link to a thread (or anywhere on t'web) and don't want a massive banner pic thing, stick the URL in quotes
"https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=shimano+brake+bleed"
Still a link without any of the unnecessary.

I haven’t for over fifteen years...
Forum page text has gone bigger and blacker, or is it just me??
There's a joke there, and I'm not making it.
