MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Our washing machine breathed its' last at 6.05 16/06/10 RIP. Much loved and abused, it has gone to join the heavenly retinue, washing angel's robes and all that jazz.
Meanwhile back on earth, the boss has expressed an interest in the LG Steam washing machines.Does anyone have any experience of these beasts and/or of LG washing machines? How reliable are they, how effective? Will they get all the muddy stains out of my riding kit, chain oil marks off my jeans etc etc???
All I can see is that they are expensive but when has that ever stopped me when it comes to bike bits?
We have got this one (I think):
LG F1443KD6 Direct Drive Washing Machine - Black
Cons - expensive, doesn't have a rinse option so you can't do a pre rinse of your cycling kit (although thinking about it you could just put it through on a mega short wash without detergent)
Pros - looks cool in black, plays a nice tune when the washing has finished, is quiet (once the feet are adjusted), all of my cycling kit comes out clean on the 40 degree "man wash", made short work of the re-usable nappies when we were using them with our nipper, has loads of other cycles to keep Mrs B happy.
To be honest its overkill for me as I never stray from the 40 degree synthetic wash and we bought it to cope with the never ending washing of nappies.
Would I buy it again - Probably.
We've had two LG's - thumbs up from me. Very quiet (induction motor) and does a good job.
No personal experience but when our white goods man came around to fix our dishwasher* I was chatting to him about white goods, as you do and I mentioned that "I liked the look of them LG's", his face immediately fell and took on a serious cast, "don't touch em mate, they're good when they work but they break down alot and parts are hard to come by" or somesuch, best stick to Bosch then says I, "yes mate, you can't beat Bosch for the money". I nodded my head sagely and made him a cup of tea.
*It was/is a Bosch too
IIRC they come with 2 years warranty and 10 years on the motor. I would be thinking therefore about doing what I always say I'd never do and that is to buy an extended warranty.
Our last machine, a gen 1 Dyson, was uber expensive and got really heavy use - had they not been discontinued we'd have bought another.
We have never had much luck with Bosch washing machines..... dishwashers and fridges yes but washing machines no. Strange really.
If you're spending that sort of money I go with Miele.
Our one came with a 10 year warranty. Possible less features than the LG but reliable.
Thanks Matthewjb, after reading this post the boss has just ordered a Miele 😯
It too will come with a 10 year parts and labour guarantee and that USP was what sold it for her.
More money than the LG but hopefully (after reading some pretty poor reviews) it will be better. LG it seems are very binary, either their product works or it is pants and the after sales service is poor. Mrs slowjo wasn't prepared to take the risk.
I had an LG and it was excellent - had it for 10 years, electronic one with lots of options and programs and a large 7kg capacity, never missed a beat and is currently stored in the garage awaiting re-fitment when I'm in a house without a build in one!

I'd not take any pointers about machine reliability from a man who makes his living out of fixing broken ones, he'd be doing himself out of a job if he recommended a reliable manufacturer!
