I drove my 2017 T6 2.0d transporter off the drive this morning then had to dash back into the house to collect something. Spotted this under where the van had been parked. On first inspection don’t recognise it. My only thought is some retaining thingy for the handbrake. Handbrake working fine (as is everything else) and no indication that there is an issue. Any ideas???
Added clues. The plastic part seems to have broken however the corroded part at the other end seems intact without any shiny bits to indicate it has snapped

You should definitely replace that spring...
...but having studied that diagram I don't believe that the Handbrake function will deteriorate.
It looks like the spring has been added to control the movement of the "Balance Bar" and stop it from rattling on the underbody of the van. Worst that will happen is you may hear a bit of bumping/knocking/rattling etc.
Hopefully yours is not a 4motion. That thing is a **** to work on with the rear propshaft in the way!
So, so true, the official method of adjusting the handbrake: drop the prop from in front of the haldex. I declined and used every extension bar I had and a small universal joint to get the lock nut done back up. It's also a really intimidating bit of the van to work on as you can feel the weight looming over you. Need a garage with a lift.
