Show me the longest/heaviest lens you use that doesn't have a tripod mounting ring on it.

Not quite sure what you are asking as they are removable?

Have used my 400mm prime without one, but often put it on as it makes for a suitable balancing point/grip when hand holding

My Oly doesn't have a mount available, just wondering if I should add one of the aftermarket bodge jobs to my want list.

It does shake a bit when mounted to a tripod mount, but most of that comes from the cork on the mounting plate.

Probably best to get a new mounting plate/quick release that's more stable, what head are you using on your tripod?

£15 ball head from Jessops 🙂 it's actually fairly solid, it just seems to be the QR plate that wobbles a bit.

In actual fact that one's on my monopod, so it'll stay there and when I get a tripod I'll get something that allows for smoother adjustment.

Sounds like a plan, solid tripod and head does make all the difference and money well spent
I'm still using a donkeys years old Manfrotto 055, bit heavy and had a few replaced parts, but does the business along with a Cullmann ballhead.

One of these perhaps:

I wonder if I'll end up with two tripods, one for macro and one for wildlife and scenery?

Never used one of those, very popular and look easy to adjust, not sure of the weight limit though

One tripod should do both as long as it goes low enough for macro and has a short centre rod (or none at all)

I do have two tripods, the old Manfrotto and a much smaller/lighter Velbon Ultra Luxi F for when I need to travel light with it attached to my rucksack.

Tend to use the same Ballhead though with q/r plates on camera and tripod ring for ease of attachment. One handy feature to have is friction adjustment, can be set so the lens or camera can still be moved, but doesn't flop forward when you release the ball lock.

No excuse for blurred shots with a decent tripod combo and remote release although tend to use a beanbag quite a lot these days as well.
Never had any luck with Monopods, tried a couple and both ended up being got rid of, sure they are good but like battery grips just not for me

It says 3.5kg or 4.5kg - I don't think my Oly is going to tax it.

There's the macro tripod where the centre column angles down, I quite fancy that but the fact the middle moves might make it too unstable for zoom work.

I asked for a monopod for Christmas. At first I thought it was rubbish, didn't do anything, but then I read up about technique. You need a ball head, and you stand one foot forward and angle the thing back either butting up against your back foot or behind your back foot with the length of it braced against your body. The latter works really well for me and slashes the amount of shake I get at 600mm but is still very portable and easy to set up.

You can also fully extend it and hold it up in the air for shots in crowds and over walls 🙂
