I'd like to aerate and feed my lawn, already have the feed but in a quandary about how best to 'spike' the lawn. It's big enough that I would really like a device to shorten the process so I've been looking at spiked under shoes, rollers etc... The usual good and dad reviews so need to turn to the hive...

Anyone got some good advice.

Cheers.

if you want it to be exercise get a hollow tine fork, the other suggestions are pretty much useless

if the area is huge just hire a lawn coring tool

either way it makes a big difference to the quality of the lawn

you should really combine it with some scarifying and then top dress with seed if you want good results

If you want to do it properly get a hollow tine fork (cheap as chips from a hire centre)

Bloody hard work but the results are worth it.

Google it and you'll find all the info you need re sand etc.

Autumn job IIRC correctly, after last cut. That way the lawn doesn't get trampled over (and all the holes closed up) for a good few months.

Tucker, thinking about it - does it matter when you do it? I appreciate there's a 'best' time to do it but I assume it can't do any damage?

If its too dry the ground is hard and the tines / blades dont get in

If you do it in the warmer months the lawn doesnt recover as well.

Do it brutally in autumn and lightly in spring

You fill the holes with sand so they don't collapse....
