Come into the possession of some Larch. Seasoned 2 years

Looking to use as window sills

Question is, once planed, profiled and sanded, thoughts on the best way to seal the wood.

Oiling the wood looks or appears the best solution from what I read on the interweb

As with any natural wood, it’s kind of “live”

Want to maintain natural beauty of grain with, and this is important, no bowing as will be above radiators.

Thoughts on products to use, tips, real life experience and professional assistance welcome

I bloody love a good bit of larch.

I would not put it above a radiator and use it as a windowsill. This depends on the aesthetic, I’m assuming we’re talking a conventional build with a plastered window reveal. Definitely not larch. Use hardwood.

Relevant qualifications: amateur woodworker. Self-built larch clad workshop. Larch decking in the garden. By god it expands and contracts.

Bring the timber into the environment it is to be used before cutting and profiling. This will ensure the moisture content will remain stable after machining to limit shrinking and moving.

Thanks, kind of what I thought, too much open grain.

Got some English Yew seasoning at moment, better option

Ok, because I love larch I’ll drop some tips to get the best of it if you press on:

It will cup. So fix securely, mega securely at the extremes of the board width, and in between for good measure.

Finish with oil. Osmo from woodfinishesdirect.

Or just use the larch to build a beautiful
Outdoor decking and get some real hardwood for a long lasting indoor project.
