I know this has been down a lot recently but suggestions in other threads have expired and things move quickly I guess with these things.
For an offspring, Word, surfing mainly. SSD preferred. As lightweight as possible but with decent sized screen (no need for tablet sized portability).
Budget 300-350. Anything obvious? Will a desktop give better options at that budget - we already have a screen. I've been using Macs for 10+ years so clueless with PCs.

Dell inspiron 2 in 1 perhaps though if you don't need to move it a desktop would be fine and cheaper with less bits to break off and easier typing
SSD not preferred, mandatory IMO. Tweak your budget if necessary.
keep an eye on the screen you get too, one bugbear about pc laptops at the low end is the shit screens they use sometimes. tis the only things that bugs me about my laptop (once I replaces the SSD of course.)
