I want to present a number of pictures on my laptop screen, with the pictures changing automatically, in a random order, but with a set timing for how often the pictures change.

I've looked in Photos, and I can do a slide show from an album, but not set the timing of the change (and I don't think it'll go in a random order).

I also thought about doing it as slides in Powerpoint, and I can set a timing in there but it'll always present the slides in order.

Any other ideas?

Screensaver?

Are they even still a thing?

Select the album with the pictures in it. You should see "Picture Tools" on the taskbar. Click on that and select "Slideshow". The slideshow will start. Right click on the slideshow to change settings. Select "Shuffle" to play in random order. You can only adjust speed to "Fast", "Medium", and "Slow" speeds. There's probably some hack to specify a speed, but I imagine that would probably involve editing registry settings or something that isn't worth the hassle.

I use Irfanview for slideshows. Has a timer you can set for how long each pic runs and also you can run them in order or randomly. Old old software tho on an old computer

Ooooh, so close! But even 'Fast' isn't very - changes every four/five seconds. I'm looking for it to change about every second.

I see Irfanview is still a thing, I'll have a go with that

Irfanview will do a slideshow, random order, choose interval. It's a free download. https://www.irfanview.com/

You could try this hack to manually set the slideshow speed:
