The blasted cat has stood on the keyboard and now nothing works. Not even the touch pad. Plug in a mouse and its fine but thats not the point. Any simple ideas to try. Preferably involving the laptop not the cat.

Actually nothing? It's a loose cable.

Loose cable would be my first thought. Other significantly less likely options would be a stuck down key that is then somehow stopping the motherboard talking to the keyboard or maybe it has some kind of local/remote shortcut key sequence that the cat managed to press. Presumably you have turned it off and on?

On and off makes no difference.
What cable. Its not running a mouse. Well it does if I put one in but its stuck with no mouse fitted. Do nothing.

Its the sort of short cut key thing that I was wondering about. Is there some industry/Windows standard? W10

Cat aids ? Cat urine ?

Take batteries out and bang it upside down. If that fails wd40 / cable ties / duct tape - anything that can't be repaired with one or more of those needs replacing

Sorry I can't be of more / any help 😳

What laptop?

If it's totally stopped working - including in BIOS - then I'd go with loose cable as Cougar says.

If you can enter setup (pressing DEL or F12 of F2 on boot are the normal keys) then it's an OS thing!

Si

Not a thing working, ie keys or touch pad. It boots perfectly though.
If I shove a mouse in, either before or after booting it works as it should do. I can type etc and use mouse to point at things like cats. touch pad still in operable but would it work with a mouse plugged in anyway?

Cracked the flexible PCB membrane thingummy the keyboard is built from?

Get a new keyboard either from ebay, or the manufacturer. You can probably take the laptop apart and find the part number of the keyboard inside. Google it.

It's fairly straightforward to replace (at least the few times I've done it).

Unless it's the world's heaviest cat I don't see how that happened.

It's possible that the cat is just a coincidence and it's a driver problem. Try going to the Device Manage and see if the keyboard and trackpad are listed there or have warning marks next to them (or if there are any other warnings). If they are listed, try uninstalling them, including the drivers, then rebooting. Windows should detect them on the reboot and install new drivers. If there are any other hardware devices with warnings, try uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling.

Correct.

and it's a driver problem.

Unlikely.

Unlikely.

But possible, and quick and easy to check and fix before you start attacking it with screwdrivers.

Are you absolutely sure the cat hasn't had a small pee on top of the computer?

Also, how big is your cat?!
