When i was a little kid, the Range Rover came out, it was very much promoted as the family / comfy / saloon version of the Land Rover, but now they all look to be comfy 4 x 4s so just what is the difference between the two?
In a Range Rover you can hear the stereo.
we have a Freelander 2 and it's mint.
One is driven over fields, the other over kerbs.
You can still freeze in a Landrover with the heater on full.
I take it you mean the Landrover Discovery and the Range Rover.
Range Rover is a bit more luxury, costs more and not quite as good off-road. Still very capable in the right hands. Possibly also a bit bigger for occupants.
Would be a Discovery for me any day.
Freelander 2 is nice but they are a tad small in the boot for me (same as old Freelander) and in a way I prefer the original as it was more rough and ready. The Freelander 2 really is a good substitute for the Discovery for people who don't really need a Discovery though - more than adequate off road, looks good but more efficient and cheaper.
The Defender is the coolest 😀
Landrover Defender any day!!, Range Rover is for posers!
not quite as good off-road
Really? When the current model rr came out, it was touted as being more capable than a tricked up defender 90.
I am comparing it to the Discovery with the similar spec fancy suspension. The Defender is behind them both due to the conventional suspension - just can't keep up any more for out and out finesse but obviously wins in the ruggedness stakes which is what is more important in some cases.
If I was going to head up some serious terrain in bad weather it would be the Disco for me. Just. But maybe that is because of the price difference and maybe because too many RRs are fitted with silly wheels but Disco owners tend to keep the off-road capabilities intact! Vehicle weight may also be an issue, neither are light cars but the extra bloat of the RR won't help.
On the other side of the arguement you could say the Disco owner couldnt afford the Range Rover!
1freezingpenguin - that was the case, the new ones are capable of roasting us well before we reach the main road, even those in the back - only downside is a lack of flat places to put your mug on the new dashboard, but the heat...
But why are they different marques? There may be arguments about which is better in niche environments, but the difference between comfy and rugged has gone.
I have to make do with an L200 but had a Landrover for a week in that cold spell, never been so keen to get on site and start chipping to get warm 😉
Defender is still the rugged one. More bang for your buck and a lot less creature comforts and needs more driver skill I guess.
Disco - in the middle. Bit of luxury, good load space and great off-roading with ease.
Range Rover - ultimate luxury but still get you round your estate with ease!
Look at the prices. Defender £20k upwards, Disco £35k upwards and RR £60k+
Get in one and the differences are clear. Whether it's worth it to you is another matter!
i've driven all three offroad and owned and soon will be the owner again of a defender,
the defender is proper no thrills utility, highly capable off road and ok on,
the disco is fine luxury and compared to the above highly powered and technically able to do everything
the above could do at the throw of a dial, very nice
the rangey is jaw dropping with massive power and speed on the road sitting in virgin first class surroundings, pass the wine my dear, off road this thing is unequaled, i could not believe we had road tyres on !! the way it drives on the computer hardware lets you sit there with your feet off the pedals controlling the car just with the flappy paddles ?? while at the same time your going up a slope that you couldn't drive a tank up.
i drove a disco 3 top of the spec on one saturday, the next week i drove the top spec range rover , both were diesel and both had under 1000 miles,
cheers for the freebee landrover, your sales teams still shit though
1freezingpenguin - what model of Defender did you have that was cold ?
I've a TD5 and granted it only starts to get warm after a mile or two, but when it does it is nice and warm.
( I also have an Eberspaecher heater to use as well, and coming out of the house on a winters morning to a fully defrosted and warmed up car when the neighbours are scraping the ice off their windscreens with a credit card is also a little bit lovely 😉 )
For off-road performance, something that people don't seem to take into account is the cost of fixing the vehicle - A RR or a Discovery are very expensive to repair, with a headlight costing several hundred quid a go. A headlight for my Defender is £11 - that, and the fact that the entire thing is one big Meccano set makes it far more practical to use and abuse off road.
Toyota Landcruiser FTW, comfort and off road capabilities.
sorry andyl but you're talking rubbish. recently went on a landrover driving experience and got upgraded to a range rover sport. i wasn't overly keen as i see them as chelsea tractors but blimey it's incredible what 2.7 ton of car can do on road tyres.
talking to the instructor we asked which was the best off road and without hesitation it was the range rover, although he said he'd have the discovery as it was the more useful car. i wouldn't buy one unless the world found a way of making oil or i won the lottery or both but they're incredibly clever with more computing power than an apple shop. the photo shows one just at the point of balancing on two diagonally opposite corners and just sitting there before pulling away with a mere tickle of the throttle. it was an amazing experience seeing what they could do.

I did one of these at the Range Rover factory test track. The Range Rover is an AWESOME vehicle and the test track an excellent sales tool. A great day out if you have the chance and want to see what these cars will do. 😉
Cranberry some old 110 with bugger all in it that was being sold at auction that our transport department lent us for the week while my L200 was being repaired.

🙄 here we go again. Usual STW bullish reply without actually reading what was posted.
Where did I say the Range Rover was rubbish off road? I said Disco had the edge for me. If you look at the specifications of both cars you will see the Disco has a bit more ground clearance and slightly better approach and drop off angles. Obviously you can get a range of wheels/tyres for both models but as I stated some owners fit silly wheels which do any off-roader no favours and you tend to see this on Range Rovers due to the type of people who own them. That is no reflection on the car though, just some of the owners who buy it pose around town. It's amazing watch such a huge (and expensive) car do what it can do!
I've not even mentioned the RR sport - mainly due to the fact I ignore it due to the type of people who buy them and the way they get chavved up. Shame as they are still awesome cars. and I wouldnt buy one as the Disco and proper RR are more practical.
I have a recent model rangie, and have owned serires, defenders, discos and older range rovers. I have to say, the new rr is the best of the lot all round. Over the winter, it behaved the best and has been the most sure footed of all I've had.
I do wonder about getting a disco next, but I get into my rr each time and think, nah, this is too nice.
