Does anyone have a Discovery 4. Looking for real world opinions on them before I pull the trigger on one.
Fantastic cars but it is big and heavy and a land rover, I would have one in a flash. New or used?
Brother in law spent ages researching this and bought a Land cruiser as it has half the fault rate, according to his research
I also know some one who sold one due to big bills
Just checked on here
Its actually more unreliable than my Renault Scenic

Well best of luck
I've got one, they are great cars, heavy and thirsty but really comfortouble to drive.
Loads of space inside, bike in back with wheels on.
And a double air bed fits nicely in the back for those early starts at CYB
Edited to add, I'm on my 2nd, I had a 3 before and that was no problem, usual wear & tear items, tyres brakes etc.
Servicing costs are quite high but it's a premium product so you pay for it.
Main dealers will take the piss if you let them, at the end of the day that's what the warranty is for,
Use them at work. Very nice vehicles and drive well for their size, still unreliable though.
Nicest thing I've ever driven. I cant imagine owning / needing another vehicle ever.
Well, surely you don't expect reliability from a Land Rover?
... best for being caught speeding apparently... 🙂

You will in about 6 months when it breaks down, again.
Servicing doesn't worry me because they now so servicing packs. I'll be buying new , so will have a warrantee to fall back on. Also being a late model disco 4 they have had a decade to iron out most of the faults so hopefully won't be too unreliable. Just seemed very nice in the test drive
If you don't need the 7-seats and pull anything abilities, have you driven the latest Freelanders - the wife has one (190bhp) and it's very impressive; not slow either at 8 sec 0-60 for an auto.
Don't fall into that trap of thinking that it's been made for 10 years............
They have been making swivel housings for 65 Years and they haven't stopped them leaking in all that time, figure that one out.
I've had No problems with mine, it's silent and robust and really well made.
The load space is huge, there's a lot to go wrong in one but it's a lot of car 😛

😆
Only time will tell Drac.
Ill be honest though, I don't buy into the fact that modern Land Rovers which are owned by private individuals are any more unreliable than the vast majority of other makes. What tends to skew the figures is the fact that the 'fleet' vehicles get treated with complete disrespect (being thrashed within an inch of their life, pulling massive loads off verges / roads when they get stuck and being raced either officially or unofficially over building sites / fields, etc). I may obviously be eating my words at some point.
8 sec 1/4m
WOW mate wasted a fortune on boring out a Ford Mustang to 11 litres, supercharging it, torque converter, the works and that's has once run 7.94 sec 1/4m
Was in one last Sunday around the land rover proving/testing ground at eastnor (not driving unfortunately ) and I could not quite compute what the thing would go up, down and across. Deeply impressive if off road is a factor.
ampthill - brain was elsewhere...
Had a Discovery 3 then an XC90 and back with a Discovery 4 now. Absolutely fantastic vehicles. Loads of space and drives like a dream. Not had any reliability issues.
Another happy D3 owner here; nine years young & few issues- would buy a D4 except for the need for driving one is shortly ending (last pony being sold). Check out disco4.co.uk for general info. on ownership.

Well one can hope 🙂
I too don't believe they are two unreliable. Funnily enough I don't know anyone who owns one but I know quite a few people who own range rivers and they have not had reliability issues. The new rr sport is only a few k more but I've decided that the discovery is the one for me. 3 months wait for a new one though I'll be ordering it in October so ready for spring 🙂
Glad people also have happy ownership stories!
They have been talking about a remote control for the new one 😀
Neighbour had his RR sport carted off on a low loader a few times. When the new RR came out last year the 2nd one I saw was broken down on the hard shoulder and lots of horror stories about having to remove the shell on the Disco to fix simple engine problems.
Still wouldn't stop me having one. We've got a FL at the moment which has lots of little faults but I have found it quite easy to work on so far when I've had a crack myself. Lots of independents for LRs who took a while to get on top of D3 repairs but they are now doing jobs a lot quicker and cheaper. I was amazed how much a full service and cambelt change was compared to a modern mondeo or Audi (not much in it).
2.5 tons is still a lot of car to be lumping round though.
A mate had one and got rid after 6 months as he was fed up with it lighting up like an xmas tree.
He's got a BMW 528i now.
Lovely cars, and no doubt as plush as the RR Vogue my mother drives, but it's reliability would have to be materially better than that (especially if bought new) for me to consider one (cost aside).
In fact, for me as the cost goes up, so would my expectations of reliability!
I guess I've been spoiled by Japanese cars and their high reliability*.
*yes, that means I'll break down tomorrow!
I spent last summer in and around the Kalahari desert and word there was that they were not up to the job and that Toyota was the vehicle of choice. The list of reasons given was very long....
Land Cruiser or Patrol for me. I love the idea of a Lanny, just not the cost.
I'm not sure the OP is driving across the Kalahari on a regular basis BillMc
The patrol and land cruiser whilst more reliable are not half as nice a place to spend time in. Nor are they very nice to drive on the road. I had a v8 petrol patrol for 6 weeks whilst I was working in Oman and whilst it had an air of undistructability about it which was fun it just wasn't a very nice place to spend time
And yes bi1lmc if I spent my time driving around the desert I would agree with you. Though luckily I live in Chichester and if it brakes down they will deliver another one 😉
Owned a Disco 3 since '06... Not really had much problem. Had an intermittent fault with suspension sensor that got shit in it, but it was just annoying. Great car!
But then I owned an Alfa for 6 years that was faultless..l so I might just be a lucky b*st*rd!
Don't be fooled by the myths of reliability of the Jap stuff either. Just as Land Rovers don't break down anywhere near as much as they used to, patrols and cruisers do a lot more than they used to. The 3 litre diesel in the Patrol is gutless yet remarkably fragile (has a habit of eating head gaskets), and there are plenty of reports of issues with the LC200 - that and its 4.8 litre V8 diesel drinks fuel at a rate not unbecoming of an Aston Martin, only without the performance.
Neither of the above is a patch on the Disco for road manners, and really, neither are a patch on its ability off-road either. Yes, lots of people swear by them, but that's because it's what they've always driven, just like us Brits with the Defender. It doesn't necessarily mean it's the best car for the job.

My mate has one of those (he sometimes has to park on the grass) we went to Torridon in it & it did 32mpg O/A.
Autos are a total waste of revs.
