Just looking for a Kindle for my other half. IF the Kindle has Wi-Fi, does that mean it can connect to ANY internet site OR only pre-specified sites ie book downloads sites?
Any site.
Edit: though the browser's crap if it's the e-ink version, just about OK for reading email but that's about it.
Any site but it has to be on a wifi network rather than using a 3G style tariff. Get wifi, can't understand why anyone would want a 3G one as looking at interweb on there is pretty rubbish. Also paperwhite is well worth the extra money over the older style.
Wifi is the means of connecting to the internet. It means you have to have a wireless network nearby - your house, a coffee shop etc. 3G means you can connect to the internet anywhere. Helpful if you are on holiday, on a beach, on a train, at an airport where they charge you through the nose for wifi etc.
Once you're on, you can visit any website, but browsing on a kindle is not something you'd do for fun (unless it's a Kindle Fire) - too slow. You can get stuff in a pinch though which can still be useful.
My dad uses his kindle for browsing stuff like lottery numbers etc. Although he just got a smartphone so I don't think he'll continue doing so 🙂
Thanks for the replies.
Note though you can only buy books from Amazon (well that's not strictly true if you have a piece of free software called Calibre and have a fiddle with a few settings).
Even with Calibre you cannot buy books directly from the Kindle from anywhere but Amazon.
Cheers

Hia,
I think you can email docs like PDFs etc. to your Kindle's "email address". I guess Calibre can send them there too. Not tried it with Singletrack but I reckon it's possible.
Another vote for the paperwhite model, although my missus is a bit disappointed with the screen having some a darker patches on it.
Anything is possible. I read books from Google on my kindle, watch youtube videos on the youtube app, connect to wireless hotspot on my phone so have internet everywhere.
