Just got my Kindle today which is great but when I slide the power button to turn it off, there is always a picture on the screen with "slide and release the power switch to wake". Is this normal? Ie is my Kindle off? I expected screen to be blank.
Thanks . I am sure there will be many more dumb kindle questions!!!!

if you hold it across for 7 seconds (iirc), the screen does go blank.

i never bother - i've had mine since january and have charged it once. the battery life won't suffer!

Because the screen is e-ink rather than LCD, it only comsumes power changing the page. Once it's set to something the screen doesn't consume power (as far as I'm aware, I'm not a Professor of E-Ink or anything). They can therefore display a pretty picture on the screen even when it's off.
