I want to get some kindles / kobos for the kids but don't want them linked to my account, though I will be buying them with the same card etc as my own. Is there some way of doing this so that they don't end up with access to the books I buy for me ?
each comes with it's own account, my missus regularly makes the mistake 🙄 of using my card for her books
but you have to register them to an amazon account don't you?
but you have to register them to an amazon account don't you?
not sure, can't remember it but I never get to see the books she bought with my card
Maybe set up an account without linking a card to it?
The Kindle comes pre-registered to your account, but you can change it easily as soon as you get it. My OH bought my Kindle as a present and I bought hers, and changing the accounts was a non-issue.
Yeah, they need to be registered to my account, so i can buy the books for them. But I don't want them to have access to my books, or the ability to buy books themselves
Create yourself a second account?
Why can't you create new accounts for them?
and register them to my card you mean? That might work. Need separate email addresses though, right?
Yeha, you could create separate accounts for them (just set up a free Gmail account or something for each just to have as an email address). Problem is, if they work out how to browse and buy books from the kindle unit itself, you can only use 1-click ordering where it just buys it straight away without any need for you to enter a password or card details. There might be some access controls, but can't remember seeing any. That would work though.
Sorry, to add to that and actually answer your last question...
Yes, you could register your card to those accounts - the account can be in a different name/address etc to the cardholder.

Block it at the router?
hmm, seems a little less than straight forward. The lack of password always concerns me too. Someone could steal / find my kindle order loads of books before i realise, then go off line and leave me with the bill!
Why /how would someone do that?
Anyway, for the kids Kindles, just buy them on your account and set up Amazon accounts without attaching a card to them and reregister them to those, it's very simple
You would have to then enter card details via your PC when you order books, there's no need at all to order them via the Kindle.
I always order them on the PC, the next time I switch the wifi on with the kindle , the books download to it in a few seconds.
It really isn't as difficult or complicated as you seem to be imagining it could be and l've never heard of any widespread security concerns with the kindle.
Buy them from Tesco/Staples/wherever
@singletracked presumably you don't want your '50 Shades of Grey' habit to become public knowledge? 🙂
If their Kindles are registered to your account, they'll always be able to get any "archived" (previously purchased) books you've had in the past, and if you have a 1-click card set up, they'll be able to buy too.
Set up their own account (without a card registered) and just top up with Amazon gift vouchers as and when you want to buy them books. Apparently "gifting" a book to another Amazon account is coming soon too.
