My car has just failed its MOT and will cost far too much to repair, so i'm after another car. My old one is Mondeo estate, absolutely brilliant for carrying several bikes around and also comfy to sleep in.
But now i just can't justify another estate (no kids/dogs etc).
I was thinking of getting a cheap small car like a Fiesta/Punto/Corsa etc as i only use the car to commute to work occasionally (ride most of the time) and then it just gets used for biking/climbing.
What i plan to do is completely remove the back seats and seatbelts to make the back bigger for storage.
I'm not bothered about resale as when it breaks it will be taken to the scrap yard.
But would it pass it's mot with no rear seats or seatbelts?
Cheers

Fairly sure it will pass, as long as neither are fitted. There are plenty of road legal race/rally cars out there with neither fitted. Theres probably something on the .gov website

Couldn't find anything conclusive on the gov site. Just that all mandatory seatbelts must be fitted... I assume this to mean there must be a seatbelts for each seat.
Like you say, i thought that if all items were removed and there is no seating or seatbelts in the back then it'll be fine.
Just wanted to double check.
Thanks.

I had thought of the van versions, but i don't really want the danger of people breaking into it thinking there'll be tools in it to nick.
It just depends what's on offer, as i'm not spending a massive amount on the car, max of a grand.

I've got a track day prepped 106 with nothing at all in the rear, no seats, no seatbelts and it passes its MOT fine. If they're not there then they can't be tested.

if you remove the seats and the belts then you'll be okay as it turns from a 5 seater to a 2 effectively, but you could always as said, look for the van version of the car,
there is an anomily with road cars that if you stip and cage it, run harnesses you Still need to have the Std seatbelts inplace! even if you have said harnesses! sounds stupid but unless its a Rally car official it still needs std front belts!

one thing to do though, before you remove the belts, pull a length out and tie a knot in them a then you can put them back with out issue's, had a few where took the belts out and not done so and they fully recoil and coul;dnt get the damn things back out! loL!

Mine has harnesses and no seatbelts. Technically I gather it shouldn't pass as I can't do them up one handed but I've never had a problem

Depending on how basic the car is, it might only be a couple of bolts keeping the back seats in. You could just unscrew them and stick the seats in the attic - you never know, you might actually want to use them one day!

Recently got an astra van, which has a factory-fit folding rear seat. Folds completely into the floor, unlike the estate version. Loads of room, but you can have 2 in the back if you ever need to.

Sounds like the MOT standard- if present, must work. Which does lead to oddness, like my bike not having a sidelight. If it had one that didn't work, that's a fail. If it doesn't have one at all, that's a pass.

Get an old people mover, seats just lift out.

I bought an old Renault Espace specifically for this purpose. They're dirt cheap and economical.

Trouble is I now like it so much, I have spent too much on it fixing little niggles. (Plastic body, never rust, galvanised space frame, never rust).

yep its no probs for the MOT-I did it for a few years with my Nissan 'Pussy Wagon'

Providing its clear you arnt going to use the back seats at all by removing the seats/belts/ and any mounting brackets.

As said,100%, totally fine. If its there, it has to work, if not, its not there to test 😉 It would fail if you had no belts and the bench there, however. Pull it all out and forget about it!
