The keyboard on my laptop is not typing symbols such as ", $ ( !

Its also opening help files and my documents when I type - any ideas how to correct this?

stw has poisoned my mind: i have no idea how to help, but i did spend sometime wondering how you typed the symbols in the post…

it took a worryingly long time for me to realise that there are many computers in the world…

HTH.

Sounds like a stuck key, alt maybe. Mash 'em all down.

Look to see if there's any odd Locks enabled, FN Lock or some such.

You've rebooted yes?

The right shift key working fine but the left still wont display "£$%&*( symbols.

Anyone got a solution? Driving me mad and can't find anything useful on google.

On both PCs is the confusing part, unless some malware is remapping your keyboard.

Indeed. But, what malware disables left shift? Have you broken the little finger on your left hand?

Are you moving the same external keyboard between PCs?

A rather crap one Cougar, which kind of suggests it's not that.

I still go for chair to keyboard interface issue.

I read that as the problem is on his laptop and now he is on his work PC (hence being able to type the symbols. Not that the problem has moved from one computer to another.

Remove the shift key and see if there's anything stuck under it.

EDIT: Done this on a PC keyboard, not sure how easy this is with a laptop?

phil.w was correct. My PC is fine.

Sounds like a keyboard issue. Luckily its still in warranty so might just take it back.
