It was a monster, with two tail fins. Bit of digging reveals...

Yep = they're monsters alright

Seen it a few times at airshows in the early 90's - awesome sight.

Cheers

Can't imagine who in Manchester has taken delivery of something so large that it needs this beast to deliver it.

My parents live under the flightpath from East Midlands, when it goes over (usualy very low as it weighs so much) it shakes their walls. That in itself would be impressive if they lived in a David Willson box made from papiermache and singe skin of bricks, but they live in a 300 year old house with 3ft thick solid walls!

Yes, the more a plane weighs, the lower it flies - well known fact.

I remember it coming into Manchester when it delivered the first set of trams, t'was very exciting as my mum lives under the flight path at MIA.

It seems quite a few flights have been diverted today @ MIA due to a burst tyre on landing.

Though some what suprisingly it wasn't the most spectular sight of the day. That went to this TCX A330, birdstrike and aborted takeoff!

We used to get an Antonov from Heavy Lift fly into RAF Lyneham from time to time, along with their Belfasts, carting supplies out to the Gulf, but that thing is chuffing ginormous! Makes a C5 Galaxy look a bit undernourished.
[edit] good bit of video of the engine blowout on that Airbus!

Love the two birds on the barbed wire in the bird strike video.
One's saying to the other "You should never had dared him to do that."

two chinook have just come past the barn a few hundred metres away, a few hundred feet off the deck. Lovely sight and sound.

Was out of service for a long time as well. Built to carry the Soviet space shuttle and when the program was shut down the plane went out of service and had bits scavenged from it and generally started falling apart.

Took them a long while to get it airworthy again.

Cheers

I used to cycle round the perimeter of Farnborough to college, (this was a LONG time ago) and another 6 engine Antonov was there for the airshow. It spat it's engine rotor out one day, so another turned up with a spare. 2 of them parked side by side. They are very graceful once up in the air.

Cannot have been two - only one was ever built (two were originally commissioned but only one actually got made).

May have been its smaller brother the Antonov 124...

Cheers

If we have awards at end of year for best post then this is the winner
Nothing in the next 6 months will come close
Genuine laugh out loud moment, even the non biking long suffering with postman and crc boxes wife was chuckling

It is when you're only a couple of miles off the end of the runway

Does anyone know what time it flew out?

I walked up to a local viewing point (sad I know), which overlooks the Cheshire plains and the airport, nothing that big flew out around 9 am.

Mmm - very large Russian plane arriving for unknown purposes. Fugitive on the loose possibly with the help of the Russians.

Very large and difficult to hide plane not seen departing.

All getting suspicious this...

10.00 am - That's good, 'cos I saw it through the binoculars. Wasn't too sure as it was small with me being far away. Sadly low cloud today, as it disappeared very quickly.

Well,
it appears that the MASSIVE plane never took off this morning, as they couldn't get the paperwork sorted in order to allow it back into Russia.
A bit odd seeing as it’s from Russia.

Not sure what you saw this morning then Bunnyhop?

Sussed it...

Edward Snowden is the cargo, complete with a full size house, in a full size street.
As it is airside he is technically 'nowhere'.
He failure to relocate to 'somewhere' is said to be due to the inability of the ParcelFarce operative to locate 'somewhere' on his sat nav.

Some, indeed all of the above may not bear any resemblance to truth.

Back in the real world - as a kid I walked though one of those things. Bonkers huge.
EDIT - sorry -actually. no. it was one of it's little brothers i walked though (at an airshow) even that was bonkers huge

As I said I was very far away and it was a whopper that I saw. Thanks MartynS, glad you made me realise I'm not going mad 🙂

Am so excited now and am going out again tomorrow, here's hoping the sky is a little less misty and without the low cloud.

ormancheep - will you be able to confirm this later tonight or early tomorrow? Thanks

Still parked up this evening when I was bussed off the Dublin flight. Got within 100 metres of it but the smart phone pictures came out rubbish.

Bunnyhop, keep an eye on the Manchester airport twitter feed. Should give you any updates on there.
Edit... And here: pistonheads

OrmanCheep - Thanks.

More misty and cloudier than yesterday, so I think I'll be lucky to see anything from the distance I'm at.
Going to get there for 10.00 am.

Edit - Taking off at 12 Noon, runway 2, heading out towards Knutsford according to the MIA twitter feed.

On a side note, I saw two Apache gunships yesterday low flying from the RAF base, went right over me whilst I rode home from work.
