I'm heading to a reported double painite hotspot - I'll see if it's still there - it might be that all mining stuff has been regenerated.
There's also some Galnet news too which I haven't seen for yonks.
I was hoping to go the Jameson's crash, for the lore, but I am not really bothered about Dav's Hope. Like you say I bet it will be fast moving for a good few weeks yet.
Matt
@matt_bl - don't panic, Exigeous has Frontier online, they said missing Jameson & Davs are a bug and they'll fix it. Phew.
Hope so. Davs Hope is great for materials
Davs Nope - at the moment 🙂

So the reported double painite hotspot is gone - looks like all mining stuff is regenerated.
I'd filled the 1 terabyte hard drive without knowing and now I'm waiting for the 10gb install at the busiest time of the day because the update didn't auto install.
Because all the updates were lined up but waiting for space and I didn't realise. A simple - hard drive full message a week ago and this would have been sorted.
Curses.
Why does the PS4 make things so hard to know/find compared to the PS3? Trying to access a usb stick for games saves was a different location to the same usb for music files :mangled face:
When I'm back near the bubble I'll take a look at that triple I found, 1k ly away from the bubble though.
I’ve parked my AspX for the night on a fleet carrier at Borann. Went over to see for myself what had changed. FCs everywhere. Not sure what’s going to happen...will I wake up a 1000ly from home or will I end up floating in space ‘cause I didn’t pay my fare?
Found some painite at Hyades Sector DB-X D-112 2. I also noticed there's a 'transfer' button above the ship inventory. Was this there before? What does it do?
Gonna buy myself an AspX and get some mining done, mainly need materials but some extra income will be nice, might as well have money to spend when I get my rank up.

Cheers, touring at the mo but that's what I wanted to hear. 🙂
I went to the Hyades sector because it was reported in the past that there had been a double painite hotspot and I went to see if it was still there. It wasn't, but there was a single overlapping with a platinum hotspot. However after prospecting about a dozen rocks I started finding painite up to 50% in about every third or fourth rock. Painite can be as expensive as LTDs but I reckon that in this spot it was even more plentiful than the LTDs at the triple in Borann.
Anyone else using reactive composite armour?
Is there some online tool that can be searched for planets with mineable rings close to whatever system you happen to be in?
What's the point of a galaxy wide cartographic organisation if they can't tell you that, eh?
*Not looking for the new Borann. Just need 10 tons of Painite for Selene Jean and don't want to spend days searching systems for it or travelling halfway across the bubble.
I find the presence of this thread very intimidating. Big fan of Elite on the BBC back in the day and I've had it on my PC for about 18 months and not had the patience to learn how to play. The fact that there are 1500 responses is either a sign it is worth my while or there is so much to it that as a very part time/idle gamer (as in one every month kind of idle) it's not worth my time.

Yep I have it on my combat ships.
Reactive Armour with Thermal Resistance engineering gives the best balance of Hull Points and resistances.

You shouldn't.
The beauty of the game is that it's exactly as deep or as shallow as you want it to be.
Just want to fly around and shoot stuff? You can do that from day one.
Want to invest half a lifetime tipping the balance of power in an entire galaxy? That's cool too.
It's the most open ended game i've ever played. There's no real goal and no real end game. Just do pretty much whatever you want.
Some people might be freaked out by that though.

Honestly - the initial learning curve is relatively steep in terms of working out what all the buttons are for, but for me that only lasted a few hours. Once up and running it was easy to make small amounts of cash and have fun. Sure I got killed a couple of times but that's not a big deal really.
The reason this thread seems intimidating is because we *can* do all this stuff, but you don't have to. You can play the game exactly as it was in the original version if you want.
As for being part-time - you can very easily just pick it up, do a few missions, then stop. The game doesn't actually require any commitment, the projects and goals we come up with ourselves do though! But even then sometimes I just jump in my ship and go shooting pirates for cash. Nothing more to it than that.
I'd say it's an ideal game for a part time gamer, you invest exactly as much time as you want. Initial training missions sort a lot of the confusion out and the training sector is a nice little sandbox to play in. Game it right and you can leave with enough cash for a decent ship.
As above, you can play however you want. It’s the only game I’ve ever bought that I’m still playing regularly 2 years down the line. I’ve got my elite status in exploring and trading, next one is combat. I’m in no rush though, so I’ll take a little time researching decent combat builds, maybe do a little engineering and take it from there. Quite looking forward to it.

Then look for pristine metallic rings for painite, then ‘detailed surface scan’ the rings when you are there, looking for painite hotspots.
Thanks all. I'll give it go.....
So if starting afresh - keyboard and mouse, gamepad or joystick for minimum learning curve, maximum enjoyment if you were starting again? Don't currently own a joystick but if the way ahead not adverse to buying one.
Blinding! 10 metallic rings within a single jump of my current base.
I'll be scanning them all for riches tonight.
Edit: and one system with 7 different planete with pristine ice rings.
I never bothered setting up my joystick and play with mouse and keyboard.
If I was fighting other players or using fixed weapons I would go stick but have to much stuttering to even consider trying that at the moment.
Did not pay attention last night but need to see if update have maybe fixed that.
I getting by fine on keyboard and mouse, joystick is more something to consider if you feel invested in it.
I wish I were on PC for this game. Incredible in VR.

Can’t help but agree. I’m having to surprise the urge to build a VR rig for this game alone 😏
It's definitely something that sells VR for me, it's just the cost that is putting me off.
Mol, how are you getting on with your PS4 pro? It’s what I run, so I have no comparison. I still got a little bit of stuttering in very busy game environments, but I’ve recently discovered ’boost mode’ (in the system settings) and it seems to have made a significant difference; I recommend trying it.

Me too. I bought PSVR thinking mistakenly that I could use it for Minecraft and Elite, but it was only £120 used. I don't own a PC gaming or otherwise, so that and Oculus Rift would set me back at least a grand. But still....!!!

It's better, I seem to have higher resolution and it's way the hell smoother, but I can't see a lot of extra detail except perhaps on planets. I've seen 'quality' and 'performance' mode in the settings but not sure about boost.
Boost is in the PS4 system settings. Give it a go. It’s kinda not obvious; I stumbled across it by accident and had to google what it does. 👍🏼

Lol, I’m in exactly the same situation 😂
@convert - just to echo what's been said up there, very open ended, play how/when you like. It's been an expensive thread for me as I decided to get back into gaming after 20 years so bought a new PC (already had an old MS Sidewinder joystick 🙂 ). I'd recommend a few YouTubers; Down To Earth Astronomy, CMDR Exigeous, Obsidian Ant, The Yamiks (a bit sweary). I saw the game described as a "second job simulator" - made me laugh, kinda feels that way.
I decided not to play last night with the updates going in. Just updating my E:D now, I'll hopefully unlock the permit to Sol so I can swing by Earth. One thing I saw last night that looked like fun was Exigeous taking a small, fast ship and racing down canyons on Pomeche 2C.
I wonder if anyone would fancy sparring? As in, fight for real, in our ships, until someone calls quits so we avoid destruction.
after a bad start i really like this ship now, it help having engineered the shield quite a lot (still a bit more to do) its quite nice being able to jump into these mission spots and take on a whole group of NPS pirates

Up for that at some point Mol. Good practice.
Has anyone noticed any different comms chatter in the top left? On a stream last night there was something from a funeral barge like "too young, too soon" and I just saw a comment from a wedding barge "I've not written my vows yet, what can I say?". Developers having some fun??
And it looks like Chakpa is in lockdown. How ironic. Even in fantasy world I can't escape it 🙂
I didn't notice that. However the space station voices seem to have become text, not sure how that happened.
I'm on a quest for engineering now. My reactive composite armour is at g3 thermal resistance, but I need access to someone for shields. Preferably without going to Colonia but maybe I'll have to. I'd need to make a note of the mats I'd need as I'm not going back again. Is there anything you can't do when you're there?
Need some more cash too, down to my last half a bil.
In other news, I played Farpoint in VR. Visually amazing, and the shooting is absolutely ace and waaay better than normal shooting. Also, I feel sick.

Have you unlocked the Dweller? He then gives you access to Lei Chung, who gives you the G5 shields.
Unlocking the Dweller isn't too bad (sell to 5 black markets). Unlocking Lei is grindy AF unless you have done a lot of trading in the game. His unlock is having sold at 50 markets
Not done any black market activity yet. I fancy trading though so I might try that out for a while - make some cash and unlock Lei on his own. I like to stay on the right side of the law 🙂 I've probably got 15 markets in the bag already since I used to stack trading with delivery missions for extra cash.
I might be able to make some good money from the delivery of nanomeds from Kuma, as per the recent news.
Trading is a welcome change of pace I find. Chuck in a couple of cabins and you can stack short hop passenger missions as well. I role play 'the harassed freighter pilot who isn't going out of his way for those lousy passengers, who want champagne service for beer money'.
The nanomeds appear to be acting like any other rare, so not a cash cow by any means, but a welcome addition (along with Galnet).
Apparently sub-surface mining could be the new thing (after being the poor relation for so long) and the new triple has been found.
Personally I am staying in my home system for a while, nice and peaceful while the FC frenzy dies down a bit.
If anyone wants to do the Guardian Module site in Synuefe I would be happy to help. I have done it, but would enjoy going again to help out. There is a good 'Raws' site in the same system and more Guardian data is no bad thing.
Matt
I might do that next time I am in the mood for online.
I also downloaded GTAV for £12. I played it through on PS3, so on the PS4 Pro it should look great. I might play it through again since it was so long ago.
Just give me a shout if you're up for it. The FSD booster is around +10.5Ly.
The last GTA I played was Vice City, though I bought IV but never played it. I have however spent a great deal of time killing zombies(ish) in Days Gone.
Matt
IV was gritty and profound, I really enjoyed it. But V is back to the glorious black humour and the richness of the world is outstanding, there's so much of it. Absolutely 100% recommended. Plus there's online multiplayer mayhem too.
Red Dead Redemption II is on Xbox Game Pass, I have it downloaded but I've not played it yet
I bought RDR2 when I got PS4. But it suffers from the same issues that RDR1 did which is that galloping around the badlands on a horse is nowhere near as much fun as tearing around a seedy American city in a stolen car.
In other Grips' household gaming news, the kids' Nintendo Switch just arrived. We made them save up their pocket money and told them we'd double their money. They are still in about £50 of debt but we had to buy the switch when it was available.
