Wanted a new TV for the bedroom; before you all flame me (based on opinions on an earlier thread), my OH is recovering from an operation and spending time up there convalescing.

Shopped around, found what I wanted, then went to John Lewis for the five year guarantee. Lo and behold, it's eighty quid dearer than everywhere else (and sixty quid dearer than the same TV they also stock with a different coloured fascia).

Rang them up to price match. Chap took my details, said they'd pass them to the PM team and they'd be in touch. Didn't hear anything back, so the next day I rang to chase, got told it'd be 48 hours! But I wanted it now, sulk pout etc. Then I went to Argos to buy some tat, spotted they also had the same TV, at the lower price. Grumbled a bit about how I could have it in my hands in five minutes, then went home, muttering to myself like a railway station wino.

Today, 47 hours later, I rang again. "Let me check," says the chap. Turns out, they've agreed to price match, and they've sent me a letter to tell me...! I felt like saying "don't you want my money?!"

So, yay to John Lewis for price matching and saving me £80, but what sort of bobbins policy is their price match service when it takes going on for a week to get a reply? Writing letters, how very 20th century of them.

Bit slow, but is £80 and a 5yr guarantee worth it? If so, quit whinging. It's Friday!

Peterfile had 3 cameras delivered & they've all been wrong! Just think how frothy that would have had you...! Winking smiley.....

You got it now so all is well!

Guess you could have bought and then applied for the match.

I thought that was how it generally applied - more of a g'tee really.

Any other outfit I wouldn't trust to honour, but kind of happy to give JL benefit of doubt 🙂

You really should have sent a strongly worded missive to You and Yours on that there Radio 4.

They'd love your class of rant!

🙂

More or less did the same other than the nice bloke in John Lewis went online found it locally cheaper and printed off the proof, did the price match there and then. Quick and easy sale, also told me where I'd find a wall bracket and hdmi cable at a better price.

Its good that you actually got a price match. Most of the TVs John Lewis sell seem to be special models with a very slightly different model number, and one very unimportant part of specification changed so that they're not technically the same as the model sold everywhere else, such that they dont have to pricematch them.

Why not ask the bloke in John Lewis to price match? I got my telly from them and just told the bloke at the counter that is was £xxx in Richer Sounds, 5 min on his computer later chekcing their website and that's what he put through the till. Walked out with the TV 30min later (you have to pick up TV's from the collections counter over the road in Reading).

Once JL have confirmed the price match don't they also then mark the item down on the shop floor? (so everyone benefits - you get karma points).

Yeah, but with the luck I've been having this week they'd then have gone "oh, sorry, we can't do it."

Do they really? That's pretty cool.

Also, the store is run by lizard people.

I'm not sure, my TV was the same price in store as it was on the website, but they do mark stuff with a cross if somewhere local is having a sale, i.e. if there's a mark on the ticket then you have to ask the staff to check the current price.

But they didn't save you £80, did they?

Was my personal experience when looking at TVs last year. Several models of Samsungs that weren't being sold at Argos, Tesco etc. but the only difference was something like 50hz rather than 100hz, and one digit difference in the model number.

"Most" was probably unfair. And it may just be that the cheaper places are buying slightly cheaper spec versions from the manufacturers.

50hz and 100hz does make it a different telly though.

I know Currys get "exclusive" versions of tvs, might have an extra light on for example, gives it a different model number.

What Pleaderwilliams said is a load of old bull. I work for John Lewis and can confirm that their stock is identical to all others on the high street/online.

If you go instore then they will be able to price match there and then but if you phone then they have to write and confirm as you have to show the store the correspondence. Pretty simple really when you think about it.

You can apply for pricematch online. Target turnaround is 24 hours. You will receive an email reference number to use in store.

Last year I visited a TV factory in Hungary where all the TVs are made for four major brands including Samsung. The factory manager told me that apart from the case and a few components they are all mostly the same TV.
