What about an Alpkit headtorch, allows your hands free to pick up poo/hold lead/throw ball etc

Head torch round the dogs neck collar style makes it easier to spot too. Our dog also seems pleased to be able to see where it's going in the dark a bit better.

slightly off topic, but we just got winter jackets for our dogs and they have hi-viz reflective strips, which show up instantly under torchlight if they're within any reasonable distance.

Tesco do some cheap blinky red and white LED things. Attache them to the collars and they can be seen for miles. With a headtorch on you, you'll be sorted for walking, seeing them take a dump and then picking it up.

Our dog wears one of these when he's walked at night:

And I use one of these:

We use a light like the Cateye SL-LD110 which loops onto his collar, tough and waterproof: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cateye-sl-ld110-loop-led-safety-front-light/

Aa LED Pro excellent and just over budget of £30
Aaa led awesome for£22
And the new magtac 316 lumen beast for just shy of£100

Bugger Maglights when DX do torches like this for $18:
http://dx.com/p/tb-d7-cree-xm-l-t6-8000k-900lm-5-mode-white-led-flashlight-1-x-18650-110262
Yes, you'll need several 18650 batteries and a charger, but you'll still come in a lot less than a Maglight. I've got an Aurora similar to this one, and it's staggeringly bright.
If you want something smaller, then this is a fabulous little light:
http://dx.com/p/trustfire-r5-a3-cree-xp-e-r5-3-mode-230-lumen-memory-led-flashlight-1-aa-1-14500-39062?utm_source=dx&utm_medium=edm&utm_campaign=20120912
Uses a 14500 cell, about the same size as a AA, but 3.7v, and uses the same charger as the 18650. For such a tiny little light, it puts out an astonishing amount of light, I regularly use one as a bike light along country lanes with a Twofish LockBlock. I can't recommend them highly enough, I've got three, carried in Fenix belt pouches.
