Morning all...

So today is 9 months on Joblesstrackworld for me.

Only 2 nibbles of a job, not enough cycling (I blame Glasgows weather) and some voluntary work to report in.

Getting fed up with the situation. 😕

How's everyone else doing?

Paul

Similar story darn Sarf for me - been looking since the end of last summer, had a potential lead from an ex client that fell through, intro to a company from a friend but they didn't have the right opening and a couple of other glimmers of hope through job agencies that ultimately went nowhere.

Currently waiting for interview on a job that'd be less than half of my last full time salary (in 2003). Sometimes I beat myself up about walking away from the rat race in search of something more fulfilling when I've since found out that most of the problem was with me, not the job. Happy days.

Molgrips, IT. Specifically Windows Server administration, with a support background. Bit of Linux/Redhat stuff. Bit of a lot of stuff actually.

MrGrim, Sorry bout that. I'll fire my CV over to you.

🙂

As I could stop doing with hanging around on here. 😉

Thepurist- understand "Sometimes I beat myself up about walking away from the rat race" so well. I'm in this situation as I walked away to volunteer in Ethiopia for 18 months.

But I did meet the woman of my dreams out there, so no regrets and all that...

You would think with all the karma I must have banked that finding a job would be easy!

Oh yes, I meant to say, not tied to staying in Glasgow either...

Well I worked for the Bank of Ireland, and decided after being made "All in it together", banking was not something i really liked doing, so through OU, Standford open thingy and Udacity have been studying software dev. primarily in Java but i'm keen not to be a Java only type as I understand the downside top that. About to look for a graduate/junior opeing and design/developement in Harrgoate/Bradford/Leeds, would happily consider probationary/temp role to prove myself as I believe i can prove my worth etc.

Writing CV is a horrific thing, not really sure what an IT grad CV shuold look like, and my part time job has become a little too comfortable for me tbh... Its very tempting to not think about it and just ride bikes...

Good luck unklehomered.

The difficult thing I find about CV's and the whole job hunting process is the lack of feedback. No one tells you if your getting it right or getting it wrong.

I guess the lack of feedback may be a hint I'm not getting it right though...

tootallpaul - shoot your CV over to me if you want. Email in profile.

I've re-written my CV many times, and we seem to be in the same area of IT.

Do you have the opportunity to move elsewhere, or stuck in Glasgow?

Same goes to unklehomered - slow day here at work, so might as well put my brain to use...

Cheers for the offer, mine's at home, and a half written mess... But threads like this help me to MTFU, finish it and start again, family illness made me drop job hunting last year as of all the things i spent time on it was the biggest thing outside my job, and was yeilding the smallest returns (nout). So I need to add recent courses etc to it as well.

In the meantime, What would you open with? my employment hist is not of direct relevence though it shows respoinsibilty. my current job is zero relevence and I suspect a put off as its with the local council. This leads me to think education i.e. recent courses, but at the same time i feel the need to explain why I'm doing uni courses in my early thirties. I was previously in credit underwriting, but when i took a short course in C++ because redundancy was looming it was like a little epiphany, but when i try to comminicate this it comes off sounding very twee...

Well, the obvious would be - what skills can you offer an employer? Are you willing/able to move?

What languages? What environments? Do you have anything to demonstrate your skills? (A simple blog with projects + source code published is a great start)
Are you involved with any Open Source projects?

Can anyone *recommend* your skills/experience?

How wide is your professional network?

How much time do you have to dedicate to 'developing yourself'?

Likewise here, unklehomer/tootal/Klunk feel free to bung your CV my way & I'll take a look at them. Also I've mentioned it on here before but FWIW I built a free peer to peer CV review website at the start of this year, partly because I thought it was something that people might find useful & partly to teach myself something about PHP, MySQL etc in the hope of becoming more employable (hasn't worked yet). Unfortunately I don't have the resources to plug it mercilessly on Google etc and as a result it hasn't gained [s]m[/s]any users, but if any of you want a look it's at www.cvjury.co.uk

If my 2p is worth anything on the CV front, tell people about your skills, what you have been involved in and what you have done to make things go well. If I have to sit through one more interview where the CV says worked on a blah blah blah project and I ask them to explain their role or to detail the work they did and they say "oh well I wasn't really involved ... " then I'll likely to end up working from prison someplace!

Good luck though gents, have to admit of all the people I've seen round this part of silicon fen recently none of them have really been out of work (not for more than a couple of weeks anyway).

Hope it all goes well.

Xiphon and others

Thanks for offer/advice/info. gonna gear up again, and I will i think try and be more confident on the CV front and 'sell myself' #cringes# more, as my big mouth has always landed got me involved in all sorts of things at work. Purist that's a ace idea/site, I shall check that out in more detail when i get home. Need to make some time for productive things...

Looking for WIntel server admins (with Citrix or VMware usually) based in Basingstoke and MK. Also experienced IT PMs, storage admins (EMC & HDS) still I think. VDI specialists and SCCM packaging people to maybe...

Can send me CVs and I can forward them on the relevant managers if you want.

Might have something going in Manchester if someone is looking for a Wintel/SQL role.

We're looking for one or two people in New Jersey too but if the right person came along in Manchester and didn't mind working out of hours a bit I'll pass a CV along.

Jesus, 9 months out isn't good. I am about to be made redundant again (second time in 2 1/2 years) but the IT jobs market in the SW seems to be pretty good.
