[Closed] Job Interview - should I tell my current employer?

So a bit of a dilemma.

I've got an interview and it's during my normal working day, but it's couple of hundred miles away so I've got to travel but we're looking to relocate anyway. I don't really want to let my current employer know I'm looking elsewhere, a couple of co-workers here have agreed and said I should just 'pull a sickie' ... right or wrong?

My wife said I should just tell them, but then I wonder if it'll make things different at work. I'd prefer to tell them when I know I've got something else to go to.

If I don't get it that's fine as it's just a sideways step, same job etc, but it'll be nice to move and we like the area.

Thoughts 😀

Take a day's holiday?

Should you tell your current employer? Nope. What if you don't get it?

Don;t tell them, just take a day's holiday - say you have to go to pick up a relative or something unexpectedly.

Don't tell them, but don't pull a sickie either. Take a day off on holiday.

If you tell them are you hoping they'll let you take the day off without using holiday?

Holiday, if you can't do that then it depends on your attitude to fraudulently pulling a sickie...

Let them know, don’t pull a sickie apart from being a pretty low thing to do what if your new potential employer finds out? After all you have let some very trusted work mate know what you’re doing who will be having to work harder while you’re not ill.

I’m doing EXACLY the same thing - Relocating. In fact it’s even about the same distance!
My employer knows all about it. In fact I’ve just been chatting to him about the new house purchase.
If you’re a good, valued, worker they’ll be sad to see you leave and will want you to carry on as long as possible. That’s why I mentioned it months ago. I don’t wannna stitch them up, they want me to do as many days as possible before I go, so we’re working together.
Simples. 🙂

Just turn up to the interview with amoebic dysentery. Two birds, one stone.

What if the first question in your interview is ....

"So, where does your boss think you are today?"

How do you respond to that?

You might not need to if he happens to be a STW reader 🙂

Take a days holiday, why would you consider pulling a sickie? If I need to be off work for any reason, like going to a different country to relax for a couple of weeks for example, I book holidays, I don't throw a two week sickie.

And stranger things have happened. The cycling world is a very small one IME.

No way in the world would I tell my employer, no way at all. Holiday if you can, sickie if you can't. remember that as soon as you request a holiday you're on very dodgy ground if it's rejected and you then take a sickie.

Depends on employer.

I'd probably tell if relocating but I have a good relationship with my employer up to a pretty senior level but I'd be taking holiday/unpaid.

Depends on your relationship with your employer. Personally I'd have no issues with telling them although they'd still expect me to take a day's holiday rather than doing it on company time, but that's because I have a good relationship with my boss.

If I need to be off work for any reason, like going to a different country to relax for a couple of weeks for example, I book holidays, I don't throw a two week sickie.
But to be honest you'd struggle getting a sick note for that. 😉

Sickie is no good, too far away and you might get called. These situations call for a days emergency leave. A close relative is at deaths door and you need to make an overnight trip to say goodbye.

Or a holiday.

I don't throw a two week sickie.

Be tough to get a doctors note for the second week

I'd not tell them, although it depends on the company so they might guess anyway when you request mid week one day holidays.

Unless there's a threat of redundancies or your employer is likely to make your life a misery and want's you gone, there's not much they can (legally) do anyway even if you do tell them.

Although I have heard of employers phoning the potential employers and basically blackmailing them with threats of trying to legally enforce non-compete clauses in your contract (probably impossible, but could be expensive for a small company) or to not do business with them if they're a supplier/customer etc.

Why tell your employer? There's nothing to be gained by doing this, and a lot to lose.

Take holiday. If you get the job, wait for a contract, then hand in your notice. Serve your notice. Then leave. That's the system - use it.

Mmm, little bit mixed, just had a quick look at some of the replies - days holiday, forgot to mention I work in a school so no chance of taking a day off as I get the school holidays, so choice would be sickie or truth.

I'm the only one in my department that does what I do so nobody needs to cover my job, the others will get through without me for a day 😀

Couldn't you just show up for registration and then climb over the back fence?

That's what people used to do at my school.

Maybe they don’t have any interview dates then.

I'd say take a days holiday, but I know schools operate differently. I would tell them.
