I've had moderate success in getting interviews on the back of my cv but not where I have to fill in a form online with "why are you suited to this job" type-Qs (and TBF it's been an age since i succeeded at interview).

I will look online for guidance, but do you have any tips?

I tend to ignore those kind of apps, still don't get the job, but I spare my self the excruciating process of filling in the form.

Look for the key attributes they're seeking in a candidate. Then show, using examples from real life that you can support when it comes to talking about it at interview, how you can demonstrate that you are suited to the job. Take a screen grab of what you write in case you have to talk about it weeks after filling in the form.

A very useful tip!

Depending on the company http://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm could be worth a look in case they're on there, in terms of getting to know some inside rumour/opinions. Also, be sure to get a really good understanding of the company if you can, the sort of people they employ.

Good luck!

In civil service, the application form just gets you past the HR Bunnies who will make the initial sift. You have to slavishly demonstrate, preferably using only small words how you have experience at ALL the essential qualities, and as many of the desirable as you can. They know nothing, it's a tick-box points system.

If you can get past them to the short list, then at the interview you get to talk to the people who matter when it comes to making the decision. Then it's down to charm and further rote descriptions of you abilities and experience, with as many real life examples as poss.

Coming from a recruitment background and with experience of finding myself work my approach has always been do as a rec con would and approach the person who hires directly.

research who you want to work for and keep in contact regularly, suggest meeting up for a coffee etc and just keep going till you meet them or until they need someone. Recruiters will prefer this as it makes their life easier and saves them a recruitment fee. This works in the real world however may not be much use in the civil service, however if they know someone is there that is good for the job who they like they will do what they need to internally to get you in.

The whole application process is there to infuriate recruiters and keep human rights staff in work simply.

civil service recruitment is simply a points game.

find out what the criteria are, target them and hope you score more than the next guy.

i find the "why are you suited to this job" answers the most effective bullshittery filters on the application form. it's also the section most likely to get the form passed round the office so everyone can have a laugh.

I'm flattered hels, but this would only ensure I did not get interviewed 😀

Actually, it could be one of Scotland's top judges, so it might work 😉
