What does INSET mean please?

The teachers at my sons school have INSET days. Usually the day after they come of holidays, apparently its for training purposes. Although I suspect it involves more sitting around drinking coffee and talking about their hols.

My wife's school are all having First Aid training for the day on their next Inset in case one of the little darlings chokes on their crisps.
