I have been told that they are excellent nutrition for long bike rides, 5 before you start & then regularly during the event.
Has anybody tried it (them?) any views on it?
Yep they are perfect for long rides and racing.
yep, nearly always have a stash of them in my bag - great ride food.
yeah, keep a bag in the camelbak at all times, and they taste sooo good at the top of a big climb
and bad for your teeth as a bonus!

but so nice 🙂
I can see the production line* from my office, i can go and eat them from it if i like 🙂
*well apart from the wall in the way.
The Haribo ones are much nicer than the Bassets ones, imo. 😀
Therre is a chap in Cycling Plus this month, the current holder of the LEJOG record, who swears by sausages because sweet stuff makes him puke.
Aldi ones are also good 🙂
The only problem with jelly babies is I can never leave them alone before the ride, they get eaten before I set off.
Ace, sounds like I am on a winner, bring them on 🙂
Wine Gums are my weakness, I used to buy a pack for every ride.
They'd be demolished long before I got on the bike.
So now I have to buy 2 packs! 😆
Agreed Haribo ones are the best! Can you get them in individual bags or just in the Kiddie Mix?
Sainsburys one are good too, they have white ones instead of yellow ones.

I used to be the same, I could only eat savory food though now I'm a firm believer in all things sweet especially flapjack.
They used to be called Peace Babies and were introduced after WW1.....so yes, eat them!
Can you get them in individual bags or just in the Kiddie Mix?
Yep, individual bags, or a tub of 600 babies!! Wahey!!
Hmm this sounds like a good idea...much cheaper and tastier than gel pouches, and with the added bonus of not having the consistency of heavy snot. Do we think the energy properties of jelly babies can match up to yer average gel (without the caffeine I suppose)?
Dont they just melt and stick together?! I find foam banna's etc are better as they don't do the above... but havn't actually used jelly babies whilst riding, just from my experience of having them in the car. I have however had other jelly based sweets in my pockets whilst riding and they've stuck together...
Am pondering what would be best for this weekends England Marathon Championships...

considering both are pure sugar probably yes. Some gels will have electrolytes in them as well and the mix of sugars will be different - but the total calorific value will be similar per unit weight
stoner - there must be amistake in your post above - similar KJ but very different Kcal ??????
Haribo is probably a bad idea for riding - I generally find I'm too knackered to chew it. And gels will help you with salt levels if you've been sweating a lot.
But beyond that, jelly babies rock. Personally I think red ones give you the biggest boost, while green ones, if it's raining and you're struggling, can just make you want to go home...
Yep, individual bags, or a tub of 600 babies!! Wahey!!
SWEET. Never seen them in bags anywhere though. I might have to pay a visit to Makro to get a tub!!
Thanks Stoner. Main difference seems to be the salt content, which makes sense. Perhaps sprinkle a little salt into the jelly baby bag for those hot summer rides. mmmmm. This thread has persuaded me to grab some before my Swinley ride tonight 🙂
