Mrsconsequence spent a day with Jedi yesterday in his playground, 1:1 session.

Despite driving from Herts to Swinley via the m25 at rush hour, suffering from heatstroke and sunburn... she was buzzing... and I mean buzzing. She didnt stop talking about it for hours and hours! Describing every section of the course, the chats, the techniques, the teaching styles, the confidence.

She's off for a ride this morning to bed in her new skillset.

Whatever you did dude, it's lovely to see! She's gone from:

Moaning every ride, trundling along slowly at the back, walking sections she'd ridden previously, avoiding sections completely she knew she could get through fine.. generally giving the impression she hated riding but still coming back out with us several times a week...

to:

BUZZZZZZZZ! practically miming jumps and drops in her sleep, super happy, super motivated, super excited about riding!

Thank you jedi 🙂

I think I'm going to spend the money I was going to use for an uppydowny seat post on getting me some coaching.

I think it has more chance of transforming my riding.

Mr Consequence, if we told you that Jedi looks like this would it answer your question?

I've just been on a course or two with 'A Quick Release'; 3 hours one-to-one last Friday then part of a group session all day Sunday.

It has helped a lot. I'm quite a nervous rider and I've finally been told how to do the attack position correctly (all weekend: "Heels DOWN!") and certain bits of trail I wouldn't go near I did at the end, so I'm well chuffed. My bike (Trek Fuel EX9/2010) was examined and set-up for me (note: don't use it as it comes out of the shop!) and I'm now investigating new tyres (Maxxis Ardent) and a reduced stem.

AND it was as cheap as chips. £15 per hour for personal training and £35 for the day.

I just need to get out even more to bed the skills in, then go back for another session!

And geetee, where did you get that photo of me? No I wasn't pooing.

LOL

It's the thinking you're pretty good already that's where you're going wrong! Even the pro's know they can improve, and get coaching regularly (be it technique on cornering, drops, cardio or whatever).

Could wax lyrical about Jedi's talents, but its already been said many a time. Suffice to say that the guy is perhaps the most natural coach/trainer I have ever come across, no matter the subject, and his belief in what he does, well he could get even the most unenthused of riders screaming for more! Anybody worried they're losing the love, or not enjoying riding as much as they used to, should go and see him for a day.

As mboy says,
I have been riding MTB's for over 20 years and have introduced lots of people to the sport in that time. I did a skills course with the bearded one last year and realised how many bad habits I'd picked up and little things I was missing. This year has been a revelation now all the new found skills have become instinctive. I recommend doing a course to anyone. Just need to convince Mrs Wachowchow to book one up as I'm no skills coach myself.

Thinking I am pretty good is not the same as thinking I can not improve, obviously! My thought processes would be that it's not worth paying for a day of coaching just for a few pointers on slightly improved singletrack speed. I might be able to massively improve my singletrack speed, I dunno.

It might well be worth it to unlock my air capability though, that's another issue 🙂

@Jedi that's not meant to be rude so apologies.

Mostly what slows me down on singletrack is common sense kicking in for the sake of other potential trail users or possible consequences of a tree impact 🙂

At Swinley on those twisty bits the limit seems to be rotational inertia and the trees being so close that you hit them with your shoulders if you lean too much 🙂

I am sure I have the skill to jump, but it's just a question of doing it. I'm sure a skills day is what I need there.

molgrips - I reckon Jedi will have you confidently in the air inside 30 mins. When I did my day with Tony I was the biggest wheels-on-the-ground fan going but wanted to get into jumping. Probably 45 mins later I was clearing a tabletop and loving it, and since then I've been looking for places to get air on pretty much every ride. I'm not talking 20 foot road gaps or 10 foot drops, just another way to enjoy my riding. Heck, I've even taken to "sessioning" some bumpy bits to try to get more air on them!

The big advert at the top of the forum summary page is probably a good place to start looking.

Edit: ... and then it doesn't show up for ages. Google Tony Doyle and you'll find a link to his web site fast enough!

Really good Jedi... Taking to the air with a lot more faith.
My focus has shifted a little from DH towards endurance riding this year (only got a HT built up at the minute) but there's no doubt the stuff we covered is making me faster every time I ride, be it up or down 🙂 I could probably do with another visit... or a cheeky play at Herts-shore anyhow 😀

jedi - are there any specific skills needed for endurance riding? Or is it just the same but with a greater requirement on the psychological side of things

i can attest to yeti's speed, moment and superior flow through teh singletrackz! stuff we'd been riding for a year and knew inside out, yeti just disappeared into the distance ahead of us... never ridden it before but did it in about a 3rd of the time we did!

its a little intimidating riding with him and you always feel a little bad holding him back 🙁 but yeah... whatever you taught him has made him intimidatingly confident and fast through the trails!

You have to be able to do the same stuff but half asleep whilst hallucinating and listening to the world service on a radio.

Cheers Phil... you know what you need to do!

Do it quick though, as I'm torn between plotting to end this Jedi training racket and wanting everyone to love riding bikes...

Maybe me and Mrs C can go out and get super gnarr whilst you convalesce.

not a greater requirement, the same skills!
the good bit being you can recover on descents whilst your competitors are using energy

As for:

I figured that would be the case, along with 'get as fit as you think you need to be, then get fitter'!

I nail trails, fly over drops, swoosh down single track through trees and drop rocky descents, with the sun shining and the trails are dusty dry ... grinning from ear to ear like some mtbing goddess ... and then I wake up! I'm so much better in my dreams 😉

Anyone else dream single track; or is it just me?

Recently I have dreamt about riding my Trek ex8 for the first time ... note I don't actually own one ... [giggles]

Maybe later in the year. Or maybe next year.

Would you require a couple to be of similar skill level in order to teach them best (instead of switching too and fro) or dya reckon a 2:1 grouping would be ok with two people who fit into your black category but maybe at opposite ends of that category?

Before I went on a Jedi course I thought I was ok downhill and on singletrack but corners I always fluffed and I needed air.

Whenever I go out riding now I SERIOUSLY scare myself at how fast I can go. I used to break traction on the tyres because I wasn't riding right but now I break traction because the tyres simply have no more to offer. Tony taught me about pumping (something I could already do but never used, oddly) and now I go faster and further for less effort - always a plus for me!! And I now confidently go off most drops and jumps fine - in fact I love them and search them out.

If you want to ride and have a decent amount of fun and pleasure on a bike you don't need to see him. If you want to get to the end of every trail giggling like an idiot, do things that you could only dream of before and finally find what you and your expensive bike can REALLY do then give Tony a call. I guarantee you that no single purchase on bike kit, no matter what the price, will make as much difference to your riding.

I went looking for a tabletop at the local jump spot the other day after Jedi's course.

The local kids thought I was a bit simple as I was giggling so much I couldn't ride back up the hill. 😆 Wish I could have kept it to the 'inner child'! 😳
