MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
We have/had a small Tesco supermarket within walking distance that was handy but was in a town with MS food, Aldi, Lidl and an Asda. It was closed in January and has just reopened as a Jacks.
F me what a souless bland shopping it is now, bare exposed racking in a featureless white interior. Also stupid business model - single items that are more expensive than the other retailers in town but buy 6 of them for a decent discount. But who wants 6 mayonnaise? Limited choice and no full fat organic milk!!!! Tesco fail.
Bring back Hillards
Hillards, that's a blast from the past.
To be fair there were two Tescos in town which was little excessive. I was going. To pop in but based on your review think I'll stick to Asda.
Hillards! That's who...
Did you buy much?
6 of everything just for the discount
Cash and Carry - they've probably seen the queues at Costo checkout.
But who wants 6 mayonnaise?
Uuugghhh.... Mayo....

Bring back Willie Low’s
^ Well Morrisons have resurrected Safeway in McColls.
and no full fat organic milk!!
That is surely an affront to your human rights? Burn the place down!
But who wants 6 mayonnaise?
Is it the cream egg variant?
Is it the one in Rawtenstall? Went there during the fit out and it was fairly soulless then. I guess it hasn’t improved.
Yeah I was wondering if the OP was talking about Rawtenstall.
Won't be long before Tesco quietly axe Jacks, been a failure by all accounts.
New Jacks stores are opening every month so dont think they will axe them in the near future.
Yep- it's the Rawtenstall one, was an okay Tesco beforehand and handy for us.
Actually the 35p crumpets are okay so Ive changed my opinion now....
Well that didn't last long! Rawtenstall Jacks closes end of October....
...to reopen as a Tesco's again.
no full fat organic milk
Oh the humanity.
No surprise there...
Id prefer a Sainsbury's then rossendale would have the full set.
Tesco seem to have lost the plot over the last 8 months. Haslingden store has really poor choice now.
Got dragged into the one in Rawtenstall once by my lovely wife just after it opened. Strange place. Picked up 6 cans of beer. Thinking I was bulk buying. Got to the checkout about to pay and some sort of manager came over.
Manager: If you buy 8. It's cheaper.
Wife: Go and get yourself 2 more.
Me : Ermm. Ok
Manager: Do you want to get them yourself? We could get them.
Me: No it's fine. I'll get them.
Comes back with 2 more cans to find the manager had walked away with 2 of our cans at the checkout. So we were still down to 6.
After 5 minutes of piddling about it turns out we'd picked up the wrong ones.🙄
Never been back.😀
I am Jack's raging bile duct
Shame about the people they made redundant in January. Still not sure why we need Tesco in Rawtenstall as well as Haslingden.
Wombwell Lane in Barnsley.... massive Tesco Extra, 100yds away, opposite side of car park - Jacks
Why?
Sounds unfortunate. One Stop is also a Tesco derivative, is it not? There is one about 50 metres from my house, and it is excellent. In fact too excellent, insofar as I will pop over for some milk, and come home with four pints of beer, two tins of Pringles, some clearance tomatoes, and a 24-pack of loo roll because the deals are too good to miss.
It needs to become a Booths
Never seen a Jacks. Is it a northern thing?
I’ve noticed that my local Big Tesco is moving away from branded to own branded goods, which I have tried and now I spend more time and money in sodding Morrisons.
[firstworldproblem]
I don’t go to Tesco for loyalty, I go there because it is on the way home and I value the hour or so that it saves on my already busy day off, so visiting multiple shops to buy the right kind of muesli or breaded Quorn thingies really busts my hump.

Never seen a Jacks. Is it a northern thing?
No, its tescos attempt to get into the aldi/lidl end of the market.
Trouble is aldi and lidl arent really all that cheap, take floor cleaner, its 75p a bottle, value brand stuff in the big supermarkets is 13-25p. Theres usually a few cheep things to get your attention, a petrol powered jetwash and a heated bike seat.
first world problem but I really wish clitheroe booths was nearer or in fact any booths for that matter
I just don't trust Jacks/Tesco with my health, I feel their stuff is cheap because it's been cheapened/made down to a cost so they retain their usual profit margains whereas Aldi/Lidl tend to source better quality 'foreign' branded goods. I may be wrong, but either way we have an M&S food as well for my organic milk!
I think Aldi are good for certain things - luxuries in particular.
Their dark chocolate is a steal, and they're good for booze - so long as you're not someone who needs the same brand every time. A year or two back they were doing an own-brand single malt for £15 which was better than pretty much anything else under £25. (this year it's about 18 or 19 and is fine). And the wine racks are cheaper and more interesting than our local Tesco metro.
Ooh that reminds me - it's Aldi Winter Gloves Week soon isn't it? Might need a new pair this year

Yesterday I think.
ah crud, I can't get there til Monday now!
Now my entire weekend is going to be set to the Countdown theme tune
Trouble is aldi and lidl arent really all that cheap
My local Aldi is right next to Sainsburys, buying like for like/equivalents I'd be at the very least 50% more expensive for my weekly shop. I don't buy ready meals etc, all fresh food as we cook everything, to say that all of Aldi's stuff is the equivalent of the cheapest of the cheap shite from the big boys is a bit silly, really.
In comparison tests they come out well compared to big brands, not blue striped shite.
Tesco should sack off this Jacks idea, there's enough buffoons around that will only buy big brand stuff to support them.
Tesco should sack off this Jacks idea
Or do it right, but then they're competing with Costco and cash and carry. Jack's has been flawed from day one but some exec will have still got a big bonus for setting it up as Tesco' s answer to Lidl & Aldi.
Ps a Booths in Rawtenstall would be awesome but I don't think they'll come South of the M65, not posh enough.
Salford is south of the M65
Whilst talking about Rawtenstall and roads - they built that big bypass / dual carriageway into the centre of town (A682) but all the southbound traffic on the A56 dual carriageway can't get on it and has to use minor roads! WTF? Two massive trunk roads and they didn't they make a proper junction! Is it just a commuter highway to/from Manchester?
Yeah I know what you mean mick_r. It can be a pain at times. They obviously didn't realise (or didn't care) how much more traffic there was going to be. Think it was the end of the 70s when they started building it.
When they built it local levels of car ownership was very low, most people worked locally and caught a bus or walked.
The mills and shoes factories have closed and now people drive
Plus Rossendale borough council planning department are not fit for purpose.
