I am waiting for my daughter to finnish at a party in the local swimming baths. Having a mooch around the place and stumbled accross the gym. What's all that about then.?

There are folks running, cycling and rowing and going nowhere.!

Never gave it a thought before but I have never been to a gym. And to be honest my belly will vouch for this fact.

Do any of you lot go.?

About four times a week. I like gyms, good for doing some exercise during the week.

Agree with both of mogrim's posts.

Good for upper body fitness / strength which cycling has little impact on. And great for dark nights when getting the bike out would be a real pain.

Regular attendee here.

cannae beat it for some vital endorphin boosts, and also for some visual stimuli from the fairer percentage of the membership.

Time saver for me. Would run outdoors but get ear-ache in cold weather. 🙁

Use a Polar HRM, it talks to the machines and records the workout. Also great for confusinfg the fat bloke on the machine next to me who sees his leisurely stroll completed at a HR of 180...

Can't think of anything worse than staring at a wall on a treadmill then getting into the hot tub with the homies

The weather never gets bad enough to force me off my bike and into a gym.

What I can't understand is, why people go to gyms when they've got bikes (that they ride) and the sun is shining! I just don't get it. And they pay for membership! It's just daft!

But if you live round Keighley the gym participants are probably on Dr's orders.

I've a gym/pool across the road from me, and use the treadmill occasionally when I can't run on the road. (mostly recently because of snow). it's dull, but if outdoor options aren't available then it's the next best thing.

I used to go when I was into body building and doing proper weights but now I've grown up I can't think of a more depressing place to be. I tried a while a go a few times for fitness and core strength stuff but all I could think of all the time was how much time I was wasting rather than being out riding.

Saying that, gyms (of the leisure centre variety, not the man's gyms I used to go to to weight lift) are fantastic places to pick up women, although obviously not as good as supermarkets.

Used to enjoy going to my college gym to do a weights session. Could never understand doing the cardio stuff in the gym, bores me senseless. I'd rather die fat than run on the spot surrounded by other sweaty monsters running on the spot. Got weights at home now, and enjoy getting outside whatever the weather.

Go 3 times a week for lifting weights. But for cardio workouts i'd much rather be outside in the fresh air on my bike.

My membership has been unused for the last couple of months because I've been riding so much.

BUT..... I don't always feel like riding/running. An hours session in the gym on the machines that exercise the muscles I don't normally use is pretty good eg rowing machine and weights. And I'll follow that with a 20 minute swim and a sauna.

TBH the cost of membership is worth it for a quiet pool and the sauna.

The gym was also a big help in building up muscles ready for surfing.

Not everyone rides bikes exclusively.

I don't go to a gym but I do have an exercise bike. I like it because I can do a 40 min session in the evenings when I'm free - hop straight into the shower without wasting too much time. I only have a few hours and it takes one of those hours just to wash and dry my hair!

If I want to go outside on my bike I want it to be at least an hour (and I'd also rather it not be in the dark)- or else it doesn't feel worth the effort somehow.

I also think I push myself harder on the exercise bike than I would if I was out on the mtb for only 30 mins. Seeing a computer detailing time left and resistance etc. keeps my motivation up.

If I didn't go to the gym and train with weights I would look like a pair of big legs, kind of T Rex like. Besides, I don't think many people dislike a strong athletic balanced physique.

i go 2 - 4 times a week, for weights, spinning and or treadmill when the weathers bad. when its good, i just do two weights sessions a week and the rest outside.

weights are a must for me to keep me strong for running and riding.

and as flaperon says, its quite amusing watching the fat guy panic. during all the snow i ran 12km in 1hour. by the end, my hr was in the early 190s and a fat bloke joined me on the machine next to me. his machine was picking up my hrm and he called the assistant over as he was worried about his hr! he kept saying to her, looks its really high even when i take my hands off the sensors...
