Today I got on the train to begin my commute after attempting to buy a ticket with a debit card, that was declined (then rushing home to collect £20 cash...a fitting number). I didn't approach the guard on the train to buy a ticket with the £20. When I got to the gates/barriers at my end destination I thought I'd try and save myself the fair and present an out of date, 13.8.12, ticket. I was then taken to one side and then asked to fill out forms for a penalty fair, £20.

Yeah I was daft and I regret it so much, not because of the £20 but the stress. It was horrific.

I defiantly won't do it again.

However it pains me to pay so much for a PUBLIC transport system that is fast becoming less and less 'public' for peak time travel. With no other viable public transport option it's a monopoly...thought the government encouraged competition...

With the coming increase in traveling costs I honestly expect a newspaper on my seat and a welcoming/nice ticket guard

Don't particularly know why I posted this, just airing my stress, but your thoughts on public transport...trains would be welcome.

Thanks!

oops, thanks for the correction.
Quick question does it show on an enhanced CRB check?

Grammar and spelling errors? It certainly does.

FTFY. 😉

As long as your Enhanced CRB isn't for a teaching job, you'll be fine. 😉

Your lucky to have a public transport system.
I wouldn't be able to get to work without a car, same for my older brother.
There is no transport with us until first bus at eight.

...yeah fairly cheap for a 'penalty', but as I said it's not the money it's the stress.
Inside London I think it's an £80 fine.

Fares would be fairer (and cheaper) if unfair fare dodgers were all caught and taken to court..... 🙂

If you think that, then you are just as silly as me. They milk people because they can. However yes, I was silly and kind of selfish.

Also loving your use of fair/fare... 😆

I remember being told that in the old Soviet Moscow fare dodgers would have their photos taken and plastered all over the Metro system causing such shame that the culprits would be too ashamed to venture out in public and that some even committed suicide.
I am not recomending that option BTW. 😉

I've used many trains when I've had to go out of my way, queue for long periods of time not kidding 15 minutes, and generally go out of my way to pay. Any journey passing through leeds train station often involves a long queue to buy ticket on arrival, often if connection is short you don't have time. Not a fare dodger but probably luck I've not been done yet (I always present myself eagerly to pay the fair when man comes, but I'm not gonna stalk the train looking for him...)

I know it suits the govt to get a nice lump sum every 15 years from the new winner of a contact to run the trains but why do they not split the contact so 2 train operating companies run services over the same line with a timetable prescribed by the network operator? That way there would be something representing competition between operators and prices and service levels could be compared. It's the same thing with water suppliers. A (notionally) market system where I have a choice of one supplier.

Damn right, crimes against humanity, and out there in public for the world to see and shame you for it!
You should be ashamed of yourself, sirrah! (Harrumph, mutter, things were better in my day, they should bring back flogging, etc, etc, Daily Mail...)

Oooohh loving the russian idea. I'm all for draconian punishments so on rethinking it, a quick beating and then being taken back from whence you came would be more appropriate for fare dodgers 🙂 That said, not sure I'd chase down the guard to buy a ticket if I got on at an unmanned station.....

You tried to dodge the train fare and you got caught. TOUGH LUCK!. Try paying your way in future like an honest person does. Also if you had been caught stealing a car would you complain and plead mistreatment?.

don't they still have those old "permit to travel" machines?

stick in 20p and make sure you only have £20 or £50 notes in the wallet, cos the old Network South East ticket machines never accepted those.

round here, you can buy ticket on tram, or just buy it online on your android phone.

You've not been found guilty of a criminal offence.

The thing is you tried and failed to defraud a train company, just like a shop lifter steals something from a shop, no difference.

If everyone paid the correct fare and we had a standard all day and return set of fares then equality for all rules.

A lot of trains have welcoming conductors but some theiving customers who dont want to pay the fare for the journey, and a lot of trains and stations dont have any staff ,so making free travel easier for some.

You took a chance and got caught and learnt a lesson that youre now passing on to others as a warning.

THIEVING CUSTOMERS ARE THE ONES WHO MAKE IT A WAY OF LIFE AND NEVER PAY.

Well there is a difference, one is a civil offense and the other is a legal offense.

I'm not trying to get sympathy just trying to air my stress a little bit. Which is self inflicted, admittedly.

It's not like shop lifting it's similar to not paying for parking and then getting clamped (not paying for a service you have used). I'm not trying to defend my actions just, I just don't accept you drawing a parallel between me and a shop lifter.

...learnt a lesson that youre now passing on to others as a warning.

Yes definitely have taken somethings away from the experience, not worth the risk. I'll commute by bike now I think. 😀 I'll just pay next time, like I should've this morning. 🙂

I have never understood why public transport doesn't cost just a very nominal fee (or nothing) anyway. Good for the the environment, good for the people travelling, good for the country, encourage greater use etc.....

Never known for being a lefty but think this about public transport and also drinking water.....
