A couple of these last night in the taproom.

While the Big Country is a Scottish ale rather than a stout it's very stout like.

The Three Hills is definitely a stout though.

Andrew at the Mounting Stone in Bramhall (famously the "least worst bar in Bramhall") has brewed a honeycomb stout which is a bit like a lovely vanilla ice cream with honeycomb bits and chocolate sauce. The smell reminded me of Mr. Whippy. A bit sweet for my taste but very nice.

Yesterday I discovered the Crich Brewery and Tap in Belper, and had a half of their excellent Buffalo Stance.

Do people have recommendations for good stouts from supermarkets? I’m a Guinness drinker in pubs but interested in trying a few others over Xmas

Had some Thornbridge Cocoa Wonderland at the club the other day, after the Thornbridge tap takeover.

Was very tasty.

For supermarket stouts Tim Tailors/Northern Monk, Northern Rising is very tasty. Available at Morrisons and M&S locally to me.

Mulligan's stout at Aldi is not bad if you don't want to spend a fortune on craft stuff

M&S have a reasonable selection currently. The northern rising, as per Jeffl, a sirencraft and a couple of others.

Northern monk and Sirencraft both do decent stouts and are in most supermarkets.

Tried this at the weekend (in the White Horse in Disley, an excellent pub)

image.png

It's nice but quite sweet, I wouldn't want more than one pint.

(FWIW Robbies have really upped their game over the past few years. A "Robbie's pub" used to be a byword for a tatty boozer selling fairly crap beer, but no more. They've really invested in their estate and are also producing consistently great beers)

Shout out to Sheep in Wolfs Clothing Brewery

https://siwcbrewery.com/

In Dunblane (next to M&S), close to the train station for Bridge of Allan and Stirling folk.

I highly reccomment Dark Nebula (3.4%)

They also do a PIECE OF CAKE IMPERIAL STOUT (10.4%)

Matty (owner) is a great bloke and lives on my street. Happily accepts muddy wet runners and most likely bikers too.

Also the fantastically named "Shandy Murray" a lager but a great name for the home of the Tennis Star.

Been enjoying the range of stouts that seem more available in winter.

Worked my way through a Jamageddon by Vocation the other day, thoroughly enjoyable.

I'll be checking my local Systemet this weekend for some more to add to the beerbliotek, but the Poppels barrel aged I had last weekend was lovely.

Dark, malty beers do seem to be considered more popular in winter, and bright hoppy beers a summer thing, to the extent that every brewer and his dog were competing to see who could make the most bitter lemon juice cosplaying as beer for a while; thankfully that’s no longer the case, but I’m perfectly happy drinking stouts and porters in summer, and more malty ales in winter.
Currently my regular pub has a Mocha porter on called ‘Three Times a Week’, by Milk Town Brewery in Melksham, which is where the pub is, and it’s very drinkable indeed!

I spent much of yesterday evening quaffing one or two* pints of Westwood Silverback Stout which was jolly nice.

*This might be a very slight underestimate

Not quite a supermarket, but Fortnums do a really nice own branded Triple Chocolate Stout which I would quite happily drink any time of year.

Not a fan of most of Buxton breweries beers apart from Axe Edge but the Nuts and Crosses peanut butter milk stout I had at Trackside, Buxton breweries pub in a converted industrial unit was lush.

I've had a few good beers from Buxton, usually find them at the Pavillion Gardens craft fairs

Axe Edge is dangerously drinkable for a strong IPA. Most of Buxton's range seems to revolve around very hoppy tasting beers/IPA's that taste too similar IMO. There's a lot better breweries in Derbyshire. They've got the Tap House in town (always feel like I've been fleeced and only drunk one type of beer when I've been in there) as well as Trackside out on the industrial estate. Not been in the pivvie since the last carnival!

Interesting, worked my way through a few Buxton beers tonight after grabbing some from the pop-up market in town today. A couple of porters, a bitter (which was excellent) a DIPA and a pale ale. All were very tasty.

The fad for very hoppy, citrus IPA and pale ales has, thankfully, died a well deserved death, and not before time.

That hasn't happened. There's still absolutely loads of them around. You're obviously avoiding them because you don't like them

Got that wrong, my regular drinking den is always trying new brews from various breweries, and whenever they get a new one in, I’ll give it a try, and while there’s quite a few which are definitely hoppy rather than malty, I haven’t tasted any in the last few years that are anywhere near as bad as they used to be. The boss of the brewery in Melksham who supplies the pub I drink in is of the same opinion as me, their hoppier brews are refreshing and perfect for warmer weather, same as all the other local breweries, they’re just not like sucking a lemon!

Grabbed a lonely bottle of the Coffee Stout from Aldi yesterday.

MrsMC says I'm  not allowed to only bring one bottle home in future

Haven’t been in Aldi for drink in ages, and as there’s one a mile from me, I think it’s beholden to me to grab some and give it a try.

Milk Town Brewery in Melksham are doing one at the moment, a Mocha Stout, ‘Three Times A Week’, which I mentioned before and it’s very drinkable indeed, definitely shouldn’t be restricted to three times a week, three times a day, more like, for medicinal purposes only, of course… 😉

When I went into Sainsbury’s before Christmas to grab some drink for the holiday break, there wasn’t much left, but I did get a few cans of Hobgoblin Ruby, and a pack of Brewdog Black Heart. I made the mistake of drinking a can of the Ruby, before the Black Heart, making me think it was pretty mediocre, but I gave it a second try and I must say it’s not bad at all, the flavour is fairly subtle, which is why the Ruby spoiled it, but on its own I liked it very much, especially if you follow the serving instructions when pouring it, it’s got a lovely thick creamy head on it.
I must get some more soon… 🫠

Exeter Ales Darkness, with one of The Raven’s wonderful pies - Wild ‘Shroom, on a bed of classic mash, with Raven Ale and Red Wine gravy. Mmmmmm! Excellent beer, goes well with the pie. 😎

As the NT cafe across the way was closed, I consoled myself with a pint of Folly Road Corvus Milk Stout in the Red Lion, Lacock. Folly Road is a sub-brand of Wadworths, Devizes.
And very good it is, too!

Love Lanes Dark Stout@6.7% is very nice and from Home Bargains for £1.49. Chris the brewer from Burning Soul in Birmingham also likes it, he's got a 7.0% Coconut Porter on at his brewery tap btw.

Not technically a stout - what the hell is an Imperial Brown Ale - but rather lovely, if a little unwise at 10.5% at 6pm on an empty stomach 😴
