MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Suilven and Canisp taken from near Elphin.
Nice one, I thought it might be Suilven.
taken from near Elphin.
They named somewhere after him? 😯
Climbed up them many moons ago with one of my mates. He sent me some photos years later of Suilven taken from an overflight in a small plane, I'll have to dig them oot now!
Very edge of Foinaven, Arkle then Stack taken from above Loch Inchard at the bottom of a friends driveway. 🙂
I stand corrected sir. 😳
Fanstastic photo and scenery...
They named somewhere after him?
That made me chuckle

Shirley that is at the top of a driveway 😉
Nah, the house is behind the photographer, a view to die for!
Quite a recognisable and widely reproduced view that one- maybe familiar from the cover of "Buildings of the Scottish Countryside". As BigR says, it's just off the road before you get to KLB, looking back inland. Quite a spot your friend has there.
Now we've established that, do you (or anyone else) fancy sharing any off road routes in that part of the world?
I haven't found a huge amount around KLB. An evening blast along the Sandwood track is fun and good for practising jumping over water bars. Another good route is near Arkle, I tend to start at Lone - http://www.offroadadventures-online.com/arkle.htm. There is a bit of hike-a-bike in the middle but if you choose your day carefully then most is rideable. I did it last year during a frosty spell but had to push a bit in slushy snow at the highest point.
If I had scenery like that anywhere remotely close, my wife wouldn't ever see me! Lovely picture.
BigR - those are pretty much the two routes that I've done but I'm sure there are more out there - some I've walked/run but not successfully devised a decent mtb loop yet.
Wowzers, what a day to be manning the streetview car: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=foinaven+mountain&ll=58.455295,-5.022603&spn=0.000909,0.002476&hnear=Foinaven&gl=uk&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=58.455295,-5.022603&panoid=mSPEQiPsqpJQb2mkCnPbAw&cbp=12,147.71,,0,2.34

The far NW is generally not as good for MTBing as you might hope or expect.
Lots of tracks that head into the middle of nowhere and stop or have large sections of hikeabike.

That's all bikerafting country
hm, that's probably a more appealing - to me - application for bikerafting than the headline stuff of sweeping down the Spey..
I'm not sure how many bikerafting trips there are on the Spey, though it does make for a good introduction to the skills required for rafting.
Here's a nice packrafting blog (no bikes in this one though)

I know, but I'm sure there are some gems that are waiting to be discovered (by me) that others must be keeping under their hat. There are so many bits and pieces (estate tracks, stalking tracks, old routes etc.) but making them work in more than 50% bikeable routes (even out and backs) that are feasible more than 10 days a year is the trick that I just can't get the hang of.
BTW good work in that pic surroundedbyhills - what exactly was the objective there? (hoping for your sake that you don't say you combined that with a sodden trudge round the loch) 😉 .
Well the thing was it was all glorious natural singletrack up untill that point 😉 We had seen the river on the map but both of us dismissed it thinking "We'll find a way across" thankfully it was estate track on the other side and about 4/5 of the way round. Gruinard Bay.

It's not like I've got a habit of it or anything...
Also in Wester Ross via Sheneval (sp)
I know the spot, and I know how tempting the map makes the route look. To be fair though, that crossing does look worse than when I've ever been tempted to do it. [edit - 2nd pic is more like it]
@ scotroutes - I seem to remember you were plannign to head up there this year, did you make it? where did you get to?
Didn't make it (but hey - there's still 6 weeks to go, right?)
House move and stuff got in the way I'm afraid. I'm currently thinking of investing in a dry suit to extend the packrafting season a bit!

That's the Spirit!
Found them!

Aye, inaugural Tour de Ben Nevis - I have memories of that crossing..
That's not me BTW, that's Richie, he's crazy.
That view is to die for, mcm. Trouble is, if I lived there, I'd do nothing but sit and look at it! Stunning, absolutely stunning.
Incredible view. Scotland really is one of the most stunning places in the world (that I've been to anyway).
Lots of tracks that head into the middle of nowhere and stop or have large sections of hikeabike.
Like all Scottish riding then. 🙂

Speaking of which, wasn't anybody off here heading through Dalnavert, in the direction of Inverdruie, on bike with packraft, Sunday just gone was it? Was heading down to Feshiebridge for a couple of days when we passed said individual...

Don't worry you'd have plenty of time to do things, waiting for the 3 days a year the clouds lifted and you could see the view 😉

Not guilty m'lud. I did meet up with a couple of Belgian packrafters last week but they didn't have bikes.
