Just a little self-congratulatory post, so bear with me...

For the first time since my accident two years ago, my weight is finally going DOWN!

After hitting the wall (literally) I never quite got my mojo back, and even if I managed to get back on the bike, I was unable to sustain it, and by the time lockdown hit last spring, I lost it completely. Even though the weather was beautiful at the time, I couldn't be arsed to change into my riding gear and start pedalling.

And so the grams, then the kilograms, started to pile on. On 30 October, 2018, I was 78kgs; by January, 2021, I reached 89kgs.

But once I recovered from Covid a few weeks back, my impatience with myself grew to such an extent that I just had to do something. So last week, I returned to an old 'kick-start' diet formula that has worked for me the in the past, and I am now two kilos lighter. Once I get started, I tend to be able to maintain weight loss (and the fitness gains, once I add riding), so I am not worried about backsliding (for now), but I am over the moon that, after settling deeper and deeper into mid-life slovenliness and its corresponding body-shape, I have snapped out of it, and look to make a serious return to fitness and to the roads by spring.

🙂

That’s great to read. Your accident was pretty bad so very understandable that you were reluctant to jump back on a bike. It’s good to hear you’ve got your mojo back!

Good stuff.

Now see if you can remember how to ride a bike 🙂

By the way in Wales we are now allowed to exercise with one othe if we don't get closer than 2m.

I'm interested in the details of your successful plan, but is the accident bit mandatory?

Well done. Last year I started at 86kg and Chub Club helped me down to 70k by Sep so I wish you well.

That is phenomenal! Now that's given me something to remember if I start losing momentum!

Wow, that's very impressive. I'm currently 85kgs and would like to get to 75kg. I'm 5'11 so just to be a bit faster on Zwift.

Well done Saxon Rider. I need to lose weight as my riding shorts were getting tight. Cutting down the drink a little and skipping breakfast seems to be helping me.

Yeah, chub club is good. I went from 90kg to about 73kg @ 5'11"!
Was a bit scrawny so did some weight lifting and protein powder/extra kcals and pretty happy at 78kg now.

It’s a great feeling when it starts to come together. Serious illness coupled with depression has meant my weight has yo-yo’d all over the place but with an upward trend for neigh on 10 years now.

But with all my operations (hopefully) behind me, my colitis gone for good and having found some AD medication that seems to do it for me I am finally making progress downwards. A long way to go and I could still easily slip up but I have more confidence in myself than I ever have done.

SaxonRider - I am fairly broken and weight is heading up. Share the kick starter diet and if I can combine that with reduced booze I might be able to turn it around.

dannybgoode - depression really screws me up for motivation. I don't think I get severe depression and haven't tried meds for it but there have been months where waking up is met with that dread thought of 'oh bugger, another bloody day' and maintaining a good diet and healthy exercise routine for the 'future' is not an easy task

@WorldClassAccident - the depression and the associated meds have been a double whammy for me. There have been weeks and even whole months where just getting up and staying in a job have all I’ve been to manage and the meds also have weight gain as a side effect. My weight went up nearly 8kg in the space of a few weeks as my diet went out of the window.

But I figured when I started them they meant I could lead a more or less functional life more often than not so just let the weight go whilst I sorted my mind out. That’s taken 18 months or so but now I’m feeling ready to tackle the waistline. It is still hard some days but I’m just taking each day as it comes but with the goal of doing something, even if it is just walking the dogs.

Very early days but I feel I am finding the right balance between decent workouts and easier days.

You're going slightly mad? 😉

Good luck on the weight loss quest, it was my weight gain and complete loss of fitness in the ~2.5 years after my cycling accident that started my own quest from summer 2016, ~95Kg down to ~73Kg in ~13 months... Been a bit of a weight rollercoaster since, not just the last ~10.5 months, now struggling to get under 80Kg.
