One of my computers is playing up

Resoanbly new machine running windows 7 64 bit. Firefox as a browser

Nothing will type on it - open a browser of a word doc and trying to type doesn't work - nothing happens apart from it has hidden windows and frozen a couple of times.

MSE updated and run, adaware, spybot. spybot found a few things which were removed.

any clues?

can you isolate it as a hardware or software fault?

Sounding like a hardware issue, do you have a spare keyboard or can you plug the one on the faulty machine into another machine?

Desktop or laptop?

Does the caps lock light come on when you press the button?

Does the keyboard work during POST / BIOS?

I would do that how? swap keyboards?

Its running ad aware right now, teh window has turned into just an outline / ghost. Mouse pointer moves but clicking on things does not work so I don't thik its the keyboard at fault

Turn it off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on again? 😉

Well, it's what our IT lot would tell you to do...

right click at the bottom of the screen - task manager - processes - see what's taking up the CPU/memory.

Tried popping the windows disk in and doing a repair or rolling back to a snapshot (or whatever windows calls it) when it worked?

Ah - that worked. I'll have a look

Some funny looking things in task manager but nothing is taking up huge amounts of cpu or memory.

That's probably your best bet. It's starting to sound less like a keyboard problem.

I'd be tempted to run memtest off a Live CD first, though.

If you wore a helmet, it would never have happened.

It might have been bashing my head against the keyboard that caused it.

I'm kind of disappointed with the other IT nerds on here - reading your OP, a stuck key was my first thought (have only just opened the thread)!

TBH, "nothing happens" when typing was what threw me. With a stuck key, generally "something" happens, just not what you expect.

Depends which stuck key Cougar. Maybe I just have the benefit of experience.

TJ - you're not really in a position of strength to laugh at anybody on this issue 😉

Had the same problem with the windows key some months back. Thought never crossed my mind as I test such faults by pressing every key so I can rule it out. You sometimes forget to tell people to start with the simple things but I did cover it by saying try another keyboard. Sadly TJ couldn't work out how to do that. 😀

May I be the first to comment without any evidence this wouldn't have happened with a Mac? 😀

<wanders off to hold down the CMD key to see what DOES happen>

<finds it orders 1632495478 copies of 'Orinoco Flow' by Enya off iTunes>
