Hi All,
I spent ~ 10 days trying to work out why my Outlook needed to be closed by Task Manager, then only opened via Safe Mode. The error message typed into Microsoft gave instructuons to take off the Outlook addins as that was the cause.
Well it wasn't.
I'm running Vista and Office 2007 enterprise, and in no specific order, I have:-
Repaired using Office Diagnostics; Tried Prgrammes > change > repair to Office, ran scanpst.exe on Outlook to repair .pst files ( found a few and repair ); double checked that all Office and Microsoft updates done; scanned for Virus and spyware; downloaded MS Malware tool and did 3 hr scan, nothing; experienced a nightmare uninstalling Office ( cos it wouldn't so had to do it manually ); run Disc clean and defrag; reinstalled office; gone back 2-3 restore points.....
No effect except I was getting other things happening such as Windows Explorer hanging, my Recycle box freezing and a general feeling that it was not well!
Then realised my CPU 'rev' counter on the vista tool bar showed it was constantly working at 25% and I'm sure it never did, then by chance clicking, opened something that told me searchindexer.exe was running at....25%!!!!
Further scanning of forums lead me to a thread, assisting a person and lead by a MS engineer. The person had exactly my prob's, so I did what the engineer said.
I can now start Outlook normally, my cpu barely ticks over as opposed to working constantly and all's well......
except to achive this, serchindexer.exe has been disabled. The other forum guy was left like it too. It confused said MS engineer!
My only ideas centre around my daughter using Sims on it....but nothing else was done that I know of.....
I have no idea why a system running quite happily for ~ 18 months suddenly throws a wobbly - any ideas?
yours in confusion
Q
ps.... for those Vista haters, the symptoms/threads indicate this has happened right across the board with O/S and verions of Office, so it's not just Vista!
