I want to swap my 330i or a diesel hatch-ish (Golf/A3) thing. I don't want to pay any more or any less than "change" in doing so.

Is their such a place?

In theory, any garage would do it. In pratice, they need to make a profit, so will offer you a lower value car than your is worth. so lets say you have a 10k car, I doubt they will offer you anything over a 8k car, those figures may be off with regards to the actual %age, but you get my point...

I'm fairly sure the usual process for this is to exchange your car for an intermediary product, usually made of paper, and then subsequently exchange this for the new vehicle.

I suspect your way will involve far more leg work and hassle

my mate paid £50 to part exchange for a swap.

Swapped a new shape mini ~5 yo, for a ~15 yo 5 series.

I suspect your problem will be that you're trading in a relatively unpopular car (large petrol engine), and are after a popular car. The car dealer won't be biting your hand off to have your car as it'll be harder to sell on. This happened to a friend who had an Impreza, and wanted a Diesel Civic, he ended up getting way under what he'd have liked just to get shut of the Impreza.

I'd be more inclined to try and sell yours 1st, as the cash will be a better bargaining tool

Aside from dealers, on the classified generally people are swapping for something quite different - I swapped a van for a car, someone might swap a trail bike for a trailer. a 4x4 for a sports car. Something they have but don't want for something they want but don't have. Think you'll find little interest swapping a medium sized car for a medium sized car.

They will ... and I was in a similar boat. I had a Saab 95 Aero, doing 25mpg, costing about £100 (9 months ago) to fill up, and lasting for 4 days.

I'd considered gas conversion, which would have been ideal. So I took it to WBAC ... I just had to realise that it had depreciated like a brick, because as nice a car as it was, nobody wanted a gas guzzling large car.

as above, but expect to lose money. I 'swopped' a 6 month old Mini for a new Mazda 3 a few yrs ago - wife's car and imminent new baby content.

Thing is, large-engined petrol cars are unpopular so you would not get a decent trade-in price. Jeez there are some bargains about though, my neighbour picked up a 2006 Spec B Legacy estate for under £5k a few weeks ago, it goes like stink!
