With no smog around I can now see a bright white light in the sky in the west, about 5oclock from the moon. Is it mars?

Venus.
It looked even better last night as it was closer to that fingernail moon.

But can you see mercury close by ?
Mars is red and sort of overhead in the mid evening at the mo.
