if I get an office/lab in a new science park
I suspect there's a good chance that the science park will be private property and you'll be thrown off
But ............ every council is supposed to supply a site for travellers to stay at
I'm quite sure you'll be warmly welcomed

Rubbish.
They go where every they want and leave the landfill/spoils/detritus of stolen items behind in huge piles.
I used to do it quite a lot when I had a campervan. It made going to weddings, piss ups, gigs, whatever dos, a whole load simpler. Drive there, park, get pissed, get back to vehicle, sleep, breakfast, drive home. There were no hotel bills to pay, and no other organising required. If it was going to be for several days then I would always find a site to stop on..... some of the very small ones with minimal facilities only charged £5 per night.
Often wondered about the drunk in charge aspect, so I always wrapped a bicycle lock and chain elaborately around the steering wheel to make it obvious I wasn't going to drive the thing and I was going to unwillingly offer myself as the test case. I don't see how they could convict you for a drink drive offence when you deliberately used the camervan to avoid drink driving! And if they did....then bollocks to them.
I think its more in the case of the woman who was allegedly assaulted by the duty Sargent recently. She was found at the side of the road in her car, over the limit 2 miles from home asleep. She refused to give a sample so they brought her in for a blood test didn't they?
Then the Duty Sarge through her on the floor causing injury.

I don't live in it (when at home), but I do park my caravan on a communial car park, where technically (according to the deeds) it isn't allowed.I did however consult with the neighbours that can actually see it from their properties and [s]no-one minds[/s]no one was bothered/brave enough to make their feelings known but they all bitch about it behind my back.
FTFY!
So I live in a van. Have done for the last six years. I've never chucked a bucket of wee into the street. I've never left rubbish behind. I've never stolen anything in my life.
It's never caused a problem except to perhaps about ten individuals over the years who took offence to my presence and decided verbal or physical abuse was the best way to make a point.
There are a lot of ways to generalize and categorize people but it's fair to say that most people are nice and some people are complete tools.
Milky, in a non-judgemental way (but curious) why have you lived in a van for 6yrs? It must give you a lower quality of life (cold/winters, space, noise) etc etc?
the tabs are pretty lame 🙄
I'd happily live in a van long-term to pursue various adventures, but I fail to see why someone would live in a van that's parked in a normal street?
I wouldnt mind Sooty & Sweep living in a van on my street. I might be abit offended if the bearded-Paedo decided to share the van with them though.

What, all Travellers? Everywhere?
Hora, do you actually know any travellers, or is this just more of yer judgemental nonsense?
Some Travellers cause problems for others. Some fixed dwellers cause problems for others. I'd say more people who live in permanent fixed homes cause problems for their neighbours and local communities than Travellers do.
Stop reading the Sun and the Mail. Hora. Try opening yer eyes and yer mind a bit more.

Maybe because there are more of them? 🙄
I'd reckon a greater proportion, iDave. Certainly going by some of the moaning on here...
Funny how a simple thread about some bloke sleeping in his campervayn quickly turns into the usual ignorant narrow-minded bigotfest. 🙄
Slightly OT - what's the deal with getting shitfaced and then kipping in a motor-home? Would you be busted for being drunk in charge or something?
There was something recently - bit vague now
anyway - if not sat at the wheel, the police need to prove that you were going to drive the vehicle
why is it fine for someone to kip in a camper van if it's in a field but not if it's in a street?
house prices

If they find you asleep in your jammies with the bed made up, they'd have a hard time proving that 🙂

Next you'll be saying the Somalians aren't all pirates

Touche 🙂
Oh my god, I've laughed at a Hora joke. I feel dirty... 😉

I know a few Somalians actually. Maybe you could come here and ask them yourself?
What to join them?
Hora stop being a dick. You know you'd poo yerself if you were ever faced with any of the folk you make disrespectful comments about.
You freeloading pint-poncer.
For no one specific reason but rather a whole load. I rented houses for about 8 years and was finding the expensive quite upsetting to occupy someone elses property. As a single man I found that I was never in a position to buy. Van living does away with an awful lot of the regular expenses.
I also prefer to own, occupy and consume only what I need. Before I bought my first van, when I gave up my last house, I sold or gave away pretty much everything I owned except for my car, some clothes and camping gear and a few books. I worked in a city during the day and headed out into surrounding countryside in the evening, setting up a tent as it got dark. Then packing it back into the car the next morning and heading back into the city. In the years since I have swapped to a van instead of a tent for more security and to save all the unpacking and repacking!
As for a reduced quality of life I can see that my lifestyle wouldn't suit most people but I much prefer it. I have hot and cold running water, a shower, flushing toilet, regular bed, gas central heating, electric lighting, a kitchen, a place to stow my bike inside and a jet wash to keep it nice and shiny! It is fully insulated and the heating keeps it toasty.
The noise issue would be a question of expectation versus tolerance?
Milky - interesting, thank you. Any chance you could post up some (anonymised) photos?
How big is your vehicle? Luton-sized?
Milky - my Dad did something similar for 6 months. He worked in Plymouth - his wife/my mum was still up in Manchester selling the house.
Drove up to Dartmoor every evening, and had the most peaceful nights sleep possible...
He had a VW Camper, 1973 model IIRC?

I'm thinking it could be a company vehicle for use on site visits when we have to work there for a bit with some test equipment etc - so has a legitimate reason to be parked up. Not some shabby 1980's transit with a mattress in the back.
Milky I guess it also depends on your age, younger and you see it as an adventure/road trip through life so far. I guess if you came at it from a divorced/sold up house due to debts etc and downsized then it'd be a much-different experience.
