The pioneer stereo in our mk 4 Golf is ok, but, dating from 2002, it has no aux in or usb.

Are the connectors likely to be standard so that I can just buy something at Halfords (or wherever) and relatively easily slot something newer in ?

The last time I fitted a car stereo was about 30 years ago and it was a right hassle, but at least I didn't have immobilisers/alarms to potentially ruin my day back then...

Thanks

As long as the old one has ISO connectors on the back - about 10mins start to annoying the neighbours.
If not you'll be swapping cables but should still only be 20mins

There used to be online compatibility checkers back in the day, try a google search and see what come up, they used to tell you what size blanking plate you'd need to fill the hole too.

It'll either be an iso connector or you can but an iso adapter on eBay for a few quid (or a fair bit more from halfords)

Thanks. I hoping to get one the same size (it's what I'd call 'old-sized') so no blanking plates with luck.

is exactly what I want.

Din or double din is what they used to call those sizes. Remember doing the one in the old scoob. Had what seemed like half the ****in dash out to get the old double din stereo out!!!!

Does your car have steering wheel controls for the stereo? If so you may need a lead so that you can use your new stereo (if steering wheel compatible)

Should be straight forward. There will probably be walk through guides on the web. Buy the single din facia from VW and it should come with a adapter harness.

Do a quick search of the VW forums, you might get lucky and find an aux jack kit that just plugs into a spare socket on the back of the radio. Sometimes they can plug into the CD multichanger socket.

Mk4 golf is DIN so that part is easy. If I remember right, the connectors are ISO but have the battery and ignition lines swapped over. You may also need to get an antenna amplifier.

Take the old one out and have a look. You may need a special tool to get it out, eg u shaped wires which disconnect the security lock, those come with the sterio but are probably long gone.

pretty sure that this is correct from memory of my old Golf.

P.S. Not sure a 2002 mk4 Golf counts as "these days" 😉
